SummaryThis position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Crop Improvement and Protection Research Unit in Salinas, CA. The incumbent actively participates in one or more phases of the research process by performing molecular biology and bioinformatic analyses as well as assisting in establishment and analysis of field and laboratory experiments related to agricultural microbiomes.ResponsibilitiesIdentifies microorganisms in soil samples using microbiological, molecular, and bioinformatic methods.Keeps detailed records of field and laboratory experimental data on soil microbiomes and plant disease control.Maintains, calibrates and modifies microbiology and molecular biology equipment (e.g. biological safety cabinets, thermal cyclers, gel electrophoresis equipment, etc.)Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes experimental and bioinformatic data using personal computers and software packages.Prepares chemical and biological materials for experimental use and safely disposes of chemical and biological waste.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsApplicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: At The GS-07: Qualifying experience for GS-07 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-06 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience assisting in research on plant or soil microbiomes; collecting data on plant or soil microbiomes in a laboratory or field environment; recording scientific data related to plant or soil microbiomes; and operating standard microbiology and molecular biology laboratory equipment in support of experiments related to plant or soil microbiomes. OR Education: One full year or progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's or equivalent graduate degree, if directly related. Related degrees may include Plant Pathology, Plant Science, Soil Science, Ecology, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology or other similar degrees provided that the coursework places an emphasis on plants or soil. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the position as stated above. At The GS-08: Qualifying experience for GS-08 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-07 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience participating in research on plant or soil microbiomes; collecting and evaluating data on plant or soil microbiomes in a laboratory or field environment; recording and analyzing scientific data related to plant or soil microbiomes; and operating standard microbiology and molecular biology laboratory equipment in support of experiments related to plant or soil microbiomes. OR Education: Two full years of graduate level education or a Master's degree, if directly related to the position. Related degrees may include Plant Pathology, Plant Science, Soil Science, Ecology, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology or other similar degrees provided that the coursework places an emphasis on plants or soil. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience directly related to the work of the position as stated above. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
