SummaryThe Medical Legal Specialist – HIM ROI will process all forms of requests for protected health information (PHI) by abstracting information from multiple Sharp HealthCare (SHC) systems. Request types include subpoenas, audits, sensitive information, etc. Ensures they are valid, accurate, appropriate, and completed within established timeframes, in accordance to state and federal laws, while meeting the goals and mission of SHC. Functions include record retrieval, faxing, mailing, e-mailing, e-delivering, copying, filing, data entry, customer service, essential reception skills, all while protecting patients’ privacy.The Health Information Management (HIM) Department plays a vital role in managing the patient’s health information by ensuring that it is held confidential. We work with all departments to maintain the quality of our electronic medical record, support the physicians and clinical staff, and strive to provide excellent service to our external and internal candidates.Sharp System Services have campuses located in the communities of Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa and consist of the Spectrum location, the Ruffin Road location and Sharp Operations Center (SOC). These offices provide the centralized integrated system support services to the operating entities within the system. These services include: Strategic Planning, Business Development, Information Technology, Compliance, Internal Audit, Legal, Risk Management and Insurance, Contracts, Human Resources, Facilities Management and Development, Clinical Effectiveness, Finance, Nursing, Systems Supply Chain Services, Marketing and Communications, The Sharp Experience and Sharp University.LocationThis position is located in Kearny Mesa, San Diego, CA.HoursPer diem: 8-hour variable shifts; includes weekends as needed and possible on call requirements. Possible shift time:930-1800.Required Skills and Qualifications
Must be knowledgeable of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Confidentiality of Medical Information Act (CMIA), Lanterman-Petris Short Act (LPS), and other laws pertaining to the ROI.
Must have experience with speaking to customers on the phone and in person.
Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel and Outlook, etc.).
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)-ASSET.
Certified in Healthcare Privacy and Security (CHPS)-ASSET.
Data entry experience preferred.
Minimum of two years’ experience in a Health Information Management department and ROI experience preferred.
