As a Backend Engineer at Uber, you'll be working on code that's closest to the business. You will build user-facing products, handle and store thousands of payment transactions per second, and develop intelligent fraud prevention strategies that scale. From building maps that help move millions of people, to the messaging systems that let us interact with them - the work you do will impact live riders, eaters, drivers, and operations teams across the globe. About the Role Uber's Safety team sits at the core of our business and is redefining what it takes to be safe on the roads at global scale. Our mission is to prevent safety incidents and empower our users in every interaction they have with Uber's services. We use real-time telematics and motion sensing technologies along with machine learning algorithms and user-facing mobile products in order to prevent unsafe behaviors on the Uber platform. Our engineering challenges range from building facial biometrics recognition to low-latency data streaming infrastructure ingesting terabytes of data daily to brand-critical features such as SOS, audio recording and RideCheck. The team's work touches all parts of the Uber experience from dispatch to on-trip and post-trip, as well as the Uber ecosystem ranging from our rides business to other newer Uber marketplaces, and ventures. In this role, you will get to work closely with our product and design teams to build intuitive experiences and ship efficient, reliable, crash-free code that reaches millions of users. What You'll Do Build and own core Safety features for the users Design and own architecture that spans across multiple parts of the Uber organization Work with Product Managers and Designers to nail core user scenarios Deliver and maintain features that impact millions of Uber riders and driver Coach and mentor less experienced engineers or new engineers joining the team. Basic Qualifications: At least five (5) years of software engineering experience Bachelor of Science (BS) in Computer Science, Physics, or Mathematics, or related field Experience coding with C, Java, Python, or Go Preferred Qualifications: Experience with developing, debugging, and shipping software products on large code bases that span platforms and tools Experience with Software Development processes such as design, planning, implementation, maintenance & documentation Demonstrated experience working collaboratively in cross-functional teams Passion for learning new technologies, domains, and challenging the status quo.
