Take ownership and be actively engaged in the entire product lifecycle - from quick hits to full feature development.Your Role and ResponsibilitiesThe IBM Cloud Databases team is responsible for developing and operating the Software as a Service offerings that provide Data Services in IBM Cloud. The range of databases team operates varies from traditional SQL to NoSQL, in-memory, stream and graph databases. In order to provide an outstanding service and meet strict SLA we must scale out operations. Due to the scale we are talking about this is only possible if we embrace a CI/CD and infrastructure as code. You need to be collaborative, able to handle responsibility, and love learning new techniques and tools.With quality and robustness in mind you will drive and implement new tools to facilitate operations, create applications to gather insights into our platform, or changes to resolve or mitigate commonly hit operational issues related to our database offerings.Strong candidates will have applied knowledge and experience of the following languages and tools / ecosystems: Erlang, Elixir, Java, Go, Python, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes or other.Knowledge in operating highly-available CouchDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, Lucene and MongoDB production environments would also be useful.The key requirement is to have a passion for developing a high-quality, highly available Database as a Service.Engineers that have been successful in this area typically have:Experience of Software component development, Container based deployments and best practice in Security, Compliance, High Availability, Resilience.

Demonstratively strong communication skills. IBM Cloud Data Services teams are 100% remote. Strong communication skills both written (Slack/Email), and Video Conferencing (Zoom/Webex/Google etc) will be required to be successful.

Ability to self-motivate and prioritize workload.

Analyzing system and application logs to understand the root of the problem

Experience of Operating/running a Highly Available live service

Required Technical and Professional ExpertiseBachelor's in Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant experience

Experience with developing monitoring for production components and instrumenting code for observability

Experience in Erlang or similar functional programming languages

Ability to debug, optimize code, and automate routine tasks

Experience in Systems Engineering, such as Linux I/O tuning, performance, memory management and troubleshooting

Experience with troubleshooting issues and bugs in a live environment.

Capability to work in a global, multicultural and diverse environment

Fluent English

Preferred Technical and Professional ExpertiseKnowledge of Erlang, Go, Python, Jenkins, Kubernetes, or other scripting languages and tools / ecosystems

Knowledge in operating highly available PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, etcd, RabbitMQ, Kafka, Cassandra, and MongoDB environments

Experience with distributed systems

Experience with developing and/or operating, complex mission-critical production database systems

Experience developing databases

Experience with database internals and diagnosing memory leaks, data corruption, replication, database performance and tuning.

Experienced in working with containerized workloads and management platforms like Docker or Kubernetes.

Past experience working with public cloud platforms like IBM Cloud, AWS, Azure or others.

Systematic problem-solving approach coupled with excellent communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive.
