- Dock to rack hardware install
- Power cord and network cable management
- OS Installation (Windows Server and Linux)
- Troubleshooting of OS and hardware issues
- Asset management
- Inventory and Safety audits
- After hours 24x7 on-call support
- Monitoring Incident and Request ticket queues
- Ticket documentation
- Standard PRD OS and hardware break-fix in an IT data center environment (Production and Pre-Prod)
- Monitor ticket queue for new tickets and assign as appropriate
- Data Center Maintenance:
- Proactive walkthrough for failed hardware
- Physical audit of supported systems
- Proper disposal of hardware and media following client guidelines
- Proper disposal of e-waste and recyclable material
- Manage Incident & Request Tickets Assigned to Queue
- Validate server(s) / task is under our service responsibility
- Contact customer for information / request downtime etc.
- Diagnose problem - order parts as required
- Repair / replace / configure as required within scope
- Complete paperwork
- Escort vendors as needed
- On-call support
- Answer pages within set amount of time (varies between sites)
- Validate server(s) is under our service responsibility
- Diagnose / repair - remotely if possible / on-site if required
- Order parts if required
- Escalate to other groups as required
- Complete paperwork
- Landings:
- Validate server(s) landing requirements
- Contact customer as required for information
- Physical land of hardware in correct location
- Build to proper build configuration according to customer requirements and cut-sheet
- Request tasks from required groups for additional services
- Monitor tasks for completion or problems and escalate to appropriate parties to resolve
- Update Asset Tracking System with server name, location, and owner
- Complete paperwork
- Decoms:
- Validate server under Tech service responsibility
- Inform customer of decom
- Request decom tasks from required groups to remove server(s) from their services
- Validate that dependent services have been halted
- Power off and remove server(s), rails and power cords
- Dispose of hardware as requested by owner
- Media Management:
- Physical installation of backup hardware
- Eject tapes from tape libraries in accordance with disaster recovery targets
- Prepare and ship tapes to offsite storage vendor
- Receive tapes from offsite storage vendor
- Load tape libraries with tapes for Scratch Pool; new, returned expired, recalled for on-demand restores
- Perform post-tape load processes on tape libraries
- Recall tapes from offsite storage vendor
- Manage on-site surplus tape inventory
- Manage the tape lifecycle using backup and library software, and any third-party tools
- Dispose of damaged or EOL tapes in accordance with Client Information Security policies
- Monitor and respond to media errors and tape alerts from backup software and tape libraries
- Data Center (dock to rack) light equipment handling:
- Install and remove (and retrofit server rack shelving)
- Operate manual pallet jacks, manual and motorized server lifts, pallet banding, maneuver and move fully loaded pallets of material, heavy lifting or shifting of loads 40-200 lbs. with a buddy assistant
- Scheduling of delivery reception
- Inventory equipment received
- Keep items separated by order number or PO number during all handling stages including final in rack placement
- Move items received form dock area to the data center assigned equipment staging
- Hook up the power cables to the de-energized server, dress and manage power cables as per DC manager's expectation
- Assist with data center miscellaneous tasks which include but are not limited to the following or as directed by the data center manager:
- Move or route de-energized power whips under computer room raised metal floor (typically 12 -24 high)
- Rearrange floor tiles to meet newly configured rows
- Assist with maintaining / repair HAE / CAE (Hot Aisle Enclosures / Cold Aisle Enclosures) vinyl curtains
- Row / Rack labeling to include making and affixing labels to racks
- General housekeeping of DCs (clear floors, move equipment to designed locations, etc.)
- Intermediate experience with MS Excel for creation of reports
- Experience with a ticket management system (such as Remedy or ServiceNow)
- Keen attention to detail
- Strong communication skills, especially written (most correspondence is via email or IM)
- Reliable vehicle and ability to drive between campuses during business hours and also for 24x7 on-call response overnight or for scheduled weekend / holiday work
- Ability to operate manual pallet jacks, heavy lifting or shifting of loads 40-200 lbs. with a buddy / assistant
- Must be able to use a ladder and lift or reach overhead for equipment installs
- Experience with server hardware; environment is a mix of rackmount and blades
- Server OS experience (80% Windows, 20% Linux)
- Windows Server 2008 / R2, Windows Server 2012/R2, Windows Server 2016 - install, troubleshoot hardware and OS; familiar with using command line utilities such as ping, nslookup, tracert and ipconfig for network connectivity troubleshooting
- Linux - basic familiarity with command line, how to change directories, use the super user command, find help for commands, use grep command; any experience executing scripts with switches / command line arguments is good
- Experience with remote build technologies such as PXE build is favorable
- Understanding of RAID
- Previous data center experience a strong plus - environments are loud, can be both very cold and very warm, working areas often cramped
- You may be standing, bending or lifting for long periods of time
- Experience supporting a Symantec NetBackup environment with an automated Tape Library a bonus
