Excel Personnel Services is currently recruiting for an Assistant Cannabis Breeder. This position is a direct hire opportunity, pay DOE and the company is offering excellent benefits.

Summary:

The Assistant Breeder offers a unique opportunity to join an industry leading research program developing high yielding varieties in a commercial agriculture setting. This role will work closely with the Lead Breeder to execute short- and long-term breeding strategies as well as conduct research and development projects. Responsibilities include the generation and maintenance of germplasm for both breeding and production demand requirements; assisting Lead Breeder with trial planning, phenotyping, data and labor management; conducting basic plant biology research and preparing reports.

Principal Responsibilities:

Oversee Nursery Seed and Clone Production Objectives:

Directly responsible for the execution of field and controlled environment seed production.

Maintain clone stock and provide healthy plant materials as scheduled.

Manage sowing, transplant, plant maintenance, pollination, data collection, harvest and seed/clone inventory.

Supervise large scale clone production.

Phenotyping, Data Collection and Data Management:

Lead routine phenotypic data collection from field and greenhouse trials.

Help to refine and streamline high throughput phenotyping protocols.

Data upload and storage onto cloud-based database management software.

Curate breeding database ensuring data accuracy.

Execute and Further Develop Breeding Program SOPs:

Pollen production and pollination techniques.

Seed production, harvest, processing, indexing, and storage.

Clonal propagation and maintenance.

Implementing track and trace program.

Sample preparation for genotyping and molecular marker development.

Logistics and Labor Management:

Directly supervise field and greenhouse personnel.

Help train and provide guidance to seasonal and hourly employees.

Organize, maintain and purchase program supplies.

Supervision Received:

This role reports to the Lead Breeder through weekly meetings and quarterly performance evaluations.

Qualifications and Skills:

Required:

B.S. Degree with 5+ years experience or an MS with 2+ years experience in plant breeding, genetics, horticulture, agronomy or related discipline.

Working knowledge of agricultural practices, seed production, genetics and plant breeding.

Computer literacy and familiarity with information management systems and MS Office.

Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with a range of team members and collaborators.

Manage time effectively to meet deadlines and time sensitive tasks.

Spanish fluency is desirable.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

May be required to lift up to 40 pounds.

Potential exposure to allergens, especially pollen and dust.

Exposure to both hot and cold temperatures in conditions that can be dirty and dusty.

Flexibility with working hours during critical periods.
