Position: Payroll and Special Accounting Projects Manager
Organization: Compass Family Services helps homeless and at-risk families achieve housing stability, family well-being and self-sufficiency. We help at-risk families to stabilize and work to rapidly re-house families that have become homeless. Our continuum of services includes problem solving, intake and referral to shelter, family shelter, transitional housing, rental assistance, and childcare, as well as counseling and therapy, parenting education, prevention, and support services.

Classification: Non-Exempt, hourly
Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours/week, hours are flexible)

Role/purpose: Process semi-monthly payroll using integrated payroll and time and attendance system, maintain accurate records, assist employees (100 full-time, part-time and on-call) with payroll related questions and ensure payroll, taxes and benefit information is accurate in the general ledger. Provide support to accounting department as needed. Work closely with HR on pay-related issues and procedures. Take the lead on special accounting projects, primarily reviewing processes and writing comprehensive accounting manual.
Responsibilities:
Payroll:
Responsible for all aspects of payroll using Innovative Business Solutions (IBS) Payroll and WebTime
Ensure semi-monthly payroll is processed timely and accurately
Point person for employee questions regarding payroll and time and attendance system questions
Responsible for generating reports from payroll system (IBS) and assisting others with technical IBS questions
Export payroll data into the general ledger and ensure appropriate coding for fund, GL account and program
Follow up on uncashed payroll checks
Reconcile payroll register, general ledger and Federal 941
Safeguard confidential payroll and employee information
Ensure compliance with current wage and hour laws and Compass' policies
Administer commuter check program
Payroll/HR compliance reporting: Affordable Care Act (ACA), Patient Centered Outcomes Research Initiative (PCORI) IRS Form 720 - Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Return, EEO-1
General accounting:
Process monthly employee benefits expenses and ensure timely payment and proper allocation to programs
Reconcile bank and investment statements (periodically done by other accounting staff)
Assist with preparation of schedules during the annual audit
Assist with accounts payable and other accounting functions
Assist with monthly financial reporting
Other duties as assigned
Special accounting projects:
Take the lead on writing comprehensive accounting manual
Mutual of America retirement accounts - tie-up loose ends and close account
Assist with projects related to process improvement and technology
Other projects as needed and as time allows
Minimum Qualifications:
Two years of payroll processing experience
Completion of Financial Accounting course and firm grasp of accounting principles
Knowledge of standard payroll practices and procedures
Thorough understanding of Excel
Must be extremely organized and detail-oriented
Ability to problem solve, work independently and as a team member
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Ability to interact with employees and vendors in a friendly and professional manner
Strong work ethic a must
Fingerprint clearance
