A Landscape Lead Maintenance Technician is responsible for overseeing and performing a variety of skilled landscape maintenance duties to ensure the proper upkeep of grounds and outdoor spaces. The role requires both hands-on work and leadership responsibilities, including training and supervising a crew.

Job summary

The Landscape Lead Maintenance Technician provides direction and participates in the maintenance, installation, and repair of landscapes for commercial, residential, or institutional properties. This role requires extensive knowledge of horticultural practices, strong leadership skills, and the ability to operate and maintain specialized equipment. The Lead Technician works to ensure the grounds are maintained in a clean, safe, and attractive condition.

Essential duties and responsibilities

Supervision and leadership:

o Leads, plans the daily work for a landscape maintenance crew.

o Trains and mentors team members on proper techniques, safety protocols, and the use of tools and equipment.

o Monitors’ crew performance to ensure quality standards and project deadlines are met.

Landscape and grounds maintenance:

o Performs and oversees routine tasks such as mowing, trimming, edging, and fertilizing lawns.

o Plants, prunes, and maintains trees, shrubs, flower beds, and other plant materials.

o Diagnoses and treats plant diseases, insect infestations, and other landscape problems.

Equipment and tool operation:

o Operates and performs routine preventive maintenance on a variety of landscape equipment, including mowers, trimmers, edgers, blowers, and chainsaws.

o Maintains and organizes tools, supplies, and company vehicles.

Irrigation management:

o Assists in the diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems.

o Manage water usage by adjusting irrigation schedules based on weather and plant needs.

Safety and compliance:

o Ensures all work is performed in compliance with safety regulations and company policies, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

o Handles, stores, and applies chemicals, such as pesticides and fertilizers, safely and according to regulations.

Communication and reporting:

o Maintains accurate records of time, materials, and maintenance activities.

o Communicates with supervisors regarding project progress, equipment issues, and potential problems.

o May interact with clients or property managers to discuss maintenance needs and project updates.

Qualifications

Education and experience:

o High school diploma or GED equivalent.

o Typically requires 2–4 years of experience in landscaping or grounds maintenance, with some supervisory or lead experience.

Skills and abilities:

o Extensive knowledge of horticulture, plant care, and landscaping techniques.

o Proficiency in operating landscape maintenance equipment.

o Strong leadership, time management, and problem-solving skills.

o Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

o Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

o Fluency in English & Spanish language both written and verbal

Physical requirements:

o Physical fitness and stamina to perform manual labor in various weather conditions.

o Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50–80 pounds) and perform tasks requiring physical exertion, such as bending, kneeling, and climbing.

Licenses and certifications:

o A valid driver's license is required.

o Applicator's license for pesticides or other relevant certifications may be necessary
