Under general direction, to perform skilled technical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electronic radio frequency (RF) communications and/or telephone equipment; to prepare the monthly telephone usage and billing report for review by county management; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first skilled working level classification in the Communications Technician class series. Incumbents perform a wide range of skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of mobile radio equipment, transmitters, and repeaters and/or telephone equipment and computer wiring. This class is distinguished from Senior Communications Technician, in that Senior Communication Technician incumbents perform more complex skilled electronics maintenance, installation, and repair work, as well as exercise lead direction and work coordination responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Installs, maintains, and repairs countywide electronic radio frequency (RF) communications equipment, civil defense communications equipment, mobile radio receivers, transmitters, repeater antennas, mobile extenders, sirens, scanners, control devices, and test equipment; inspects radio units to determine frequency and deviation, as well as compliance with proper operating frequencies, and constants; adjusts frequency control mechanisms; performs test operations of new equipment, prior to installation in the field; repairs damaged and defective units; installs and inspects new units for effective operations; installs wiring for computer systems and networks; performs cellular phone installations; installs lighting and emergency warning systems on law enforcement vehicles; operates a variety of testing and measuring equipment, including frequency and modulation monitors, voltmeters, ohmmeters, tube and transistor analyzers, impedance bridge, oscilloscope, signal generators, radio frequency output meters, and telephone transmission equipment; installs, maintains, and repairs telephone equipment, coordinating with vendors as necessary; operates computerized communications and switching systems; installs computer wiring for networks; prepares telephone billing and usage reports for county management; performs preventive maintenance on communications equipment, including mountain top repeaters and control stations and solar and thermoelectric alternate energy systems; installs complex electronics equipment in vehicles and boats; performs welding and soldering; prepares and maintains a variety of records and reports.

Training and Experience:

Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Two years of responsible experience in electronic or telephone installation, maintenance, and repair work, including substantial experience working with RF electronic communications equipment.

Special Requirements:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid and applicable drivers license.

An incumbent may be required to obtain a General Class Radio Telephone Operators License issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
