Overview

Under the direction of the Health Services Administrator (HSA), Program Manager (PM), or higher licensed medical professional, the per diem Dentist will have the responsibility of providing dental care for the county assigned in compliance with all applicable dental standards, state and federal regulations and laws.

Qualifications

Education for Dentist:
  • Graduate of an accredited Dental School.

Experience for Dentist: Prefer correctional/detention facility experience Minimum 3 years' of experience, and correctional experience is preferred

Licenses/Certifications for Dentist: Unrestricted current dental license from the state of practice - must maintain all certifications, educational requirements, licensing, etc. Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS and PALS (where applicable) certification through AHA

Responsibilities

  1. Provide and supervise dental care of persons served
  2. Relief of pain and treatment of acute and chronic infections
  3. Extraction of unsalvageable teeth
  4. Provide fillings to eligible patients, as needed
  5. Provide Phase One Periodontal Services to eligible persons served, as needed
  6. Detects disease by completing oral cancer screening; feeling and visually examining gums; using probes to locate periodontal disease and to assess levels of recession; exposing and developing radiographic studies
  7. Maintains persons served appearance and ability to masticate by fabricating temporary restorations; cleaning and polishing removable appliances; placing, carving, and finishing amalgam restorations; removing cement from crowns and bridges
  8. Ensure that all dental equipment is clean and in good working order
  9. Function as a consultant to health services staff physician regarding dental issues
  10. Provide in-service training for health services staff on issues such as dental hygiene, dental care, and dental emergencies annually
  11. Document all services provided and refused in persons served dental/medical record
  12. Provide direct supervision to the dental assistant and hygienist
  13. Oversee that the sharps log daily and accurate with each dental clinic
  14. Oversee the ordering of dental supplies and instruments
  15. Ensure that dental facility and procedures meets both OSHA and Dental Board of California requirements
  16. Observe HIPPA guidelines as it applies to a custodial environment to maintain confidentiality of persons served health information
  17. Chart all findings in persons served record providing written summaries of history, diagnosis, treatment plan, treatment and other documentation requirements including necessary persons served conversations and as outlined by the company and Facility
  18. May assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process of potential staff
  19. May assist for orientation and training of new employees
  20. Contribute to the performance evaluations and successful training of direct reports
  21. Perform other duties as assigned.
