American Farmland Trust seeks a San Joaquin Valley Project Manager to join its California team of dynamic professionals. The position is a mid-level professional responsible for developing and managing farmland conservation and stewardship projects in the San Joaquin Valley, where AFT has worked on protecting farmland and sound farming practices since 1983. Under the direction of the California Conservation and Stewardship Program Manager, the Project Manager will develop local partnerships with farmers and other local partners to develop and implement land protection and soil and water stewardship projects related to AFTs San Joaquin Land and Water Strategy. The Project Manager is a full-time (37.5 hours/week) position based out of a remote-work location in the northern San Joaquin Valley. The position requires regular travel in the San Joaquin Valley and occasional travel elsewhere in the state. The position requires attendance and participation in meetings and workshops that occur in evenings and on weekends. Duties & Responsibilities

Successfully develop and manage multiple projects and programs including managing budgets and fulfilling contractual requirements.

Cultivate and maintains strong relationships with local, state, and federal officials, ag commodity groups, conservation organizations, food and community organizations and others.

Engage directly with farmers and ranchers to improve and expand natural resource conservation and habitat enhancement practices.

Identify agricultural conservation easement projects

Identify, develop, and oversee implementation of soil health improvement, water conservation, and groundwater recharge projects.

Represent AFT at public meetings, conferences, workshops, and trainings.

Assist in delivering education workshops related to agricultural best management practices including soil health and water conservation.

Develop funding proposals to institutional partners.

Work with AFT communications staff and others to create high-quality and compelling written products.

Work with other staff to develop annual program and budget goals.

Complete other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Located in the northern San Joaquin Valley: Fresno, Madera, Merced, Stanislaus, or San Joaquin Counties with at least 5 years of local, practical experience in agriculture-related natural resource management and project management.

Bachelor's degree in relevant agricultural and/or natural resource management discipline.

Practical experience in soil health management systems and/or cropping systems.

Working knowledge of production agriculture in California, natural resource conservation principles, conservation planning, nutrient management, water efficiency, water quality and quantity management.

Experience developing and implementing on-the-ground conservation projects and/or conservation easements/

Experience working collaboratively within partnerships including farmers, researchers, public agencies, and others.

Highly motivated self-starter and problem solver who can work independently and with a team and who has strong interpersonal skills.

Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Experience developing and executing projects and programs from start to finish including program and partnership development, budget development, fundraising, implementation, and evaluation.

Ability to meet deadlines, multi-task, and be flexible.

Experience working under, writing and/or managing grants.

Positive attitude in a challenging, dynamic work environment.

Ability to think creatively and strategically.

Well-organized and disciplined.

Basic computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and remote meeting/presentation software.

Basic GIS skills.

Valid CA drivers license.
