Job Title: Senior Engineer, MechanicalReq #: 214016BRLocation/Division Specific InformationSunnyvale, CA | Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry DivisionPosition Summary:The Senior Mechanical Engineer will be part of a larger engineering team tasked with hardware design, development, and support of our ion chromatography technologies. The individual will lead the mechanical or electromechanical design of components or systems through all stages of the product lifecycle.A Day in the Life:· Design and validate new products.· Maintain and/or improve existing products to achieve better quality and/or cost reductions.· Use 3D CAD (CREO) to perform mechanical design, modeling, and detailing of parts, assemblies, and drawings.· Coordinate with Project Manager to develop and implement a detailed schedule of mechanical activities that align with the overall project goals.· Coordinate with vendors to optimize Design for Manufacturability (DFM).· Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified products.· Present technical data, including issues, risks, and opportunities to multi-functional audiences, including· Project Management, Product Management, R&D Chemists, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain.· Mentor less experienced engineers.· Direct activities of support personnel to order parts, assemble breadboards, and assemble prototypes for testing.· Plan and develop experimental test programs.· Write and release Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) for engineering drawings and Bills of Material (BOMs)· Assist in the transfer of products to Manufacturing, including documentation, training, and test fixturesKeys to Success:Education· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent, with 5 years related work experience.· Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Material Science, or equivalent, with 3 years related work experienceExperience· Experience performing ECOs and creating/updating BOMs; SAP and Oracle is a plus.· High proficiency using 3D CAD software; CREO/Windchill is a plus· Experience with fluidic devices (e.g. pumps, transducers, tubing, fittings) in the medical device or scientific instrument industry· Experience designing electro-mechanical devices preferred· Experience using CREO for sheet metal and molded plastics design preferred· Experience with thermal design, including ovens and thermo-electric coolers (TEC) preferred· Experience with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD); FloEFD is a plus· Experience developing under ISO 9001 quality management systems preferredKnowledge, Skills, Abilities· Strong knowledge of a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.· Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA); CREO Simulate is a plus.· Strong knowledge of ANSI drafting standards and GD&T· Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to clearly communicate technical content to peers and management, support conclusions and recommendations with calculations, test data, industry literature, etc.· Excellent digital literacy, including Microsoft Word, Excel· Excellent organizational and time management skills· Strong analytical and problem solving ability· Strong knowledge of manufacturing thermoplastic components, (machined and injection molded), including PEEK, PTFE, UHMW, and others.· Strong knowledge of manufacturing sheet metal· Strong knowledge of applied materials science· Demonstrated success in managing projects· Proficiency using common machine shop power tools (e.g. mill, lathe, drill-press).Thermo Fisher Scientific is an EEO/Affirmative Action Employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability or any other legally protected status.
