Job DescriptionSouthern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.The jobThe System & Reliability Strategy team is looking for an experienced Root Cause Engineer in the Root Cause Engineering group. The Root Cause Engineering group consists of engineers and specialists that are responsible for performing and reporting on root cause evaluations for Southern California Edison’s electric grid. The group works collaboratively with apparatus engineers, field engineers and field personnel to perform root cause analysis (RCA) and determine the fundamental cause of nonconformity that may extend beyond the immediate cause of a failure. They will work alongside with subject matter experts to identify trends and help develop short term and long term mitigation strategies. The Root Cause Engineer will engage with district personnel to ensure equipment/material/tool is being collected and delivered from the districts for evaluation, perform RCA work, and communicate findings to stakeholders throughout the company. The position will also evaluate and execute process improvements in the investigation tracking system.Detailed stuff you’ll be doing

Develop RCAs of Distribution, Substation, or Transmission equipment, tooling and/or other component defects and failures.

Collaborate with apparatus engineers, field engineers, and field personnel to perform RCAs.

Determine disposition of root cause of issues impacting equipment performance, safety, and quality. Seek Root Cause Management and subject matter expert buy-in.

Engage with district personnel to ensure the equipment/material/tool is being collected and delivered from the districts for evaluation.

Communicate technical information, and understand the organizational and regulatory expectation in conducting investigations.

Evaluate and execute process improvements in the investigation tracking system.

Build trend reports and communicate findings to Root Cause Management and impacted stakeholders.

Mentor engineering interns and entry level engineers as required.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.

QualificationsYou absolutely need to have…

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Mechanical Science or related scientific/technical field.

5 or more years of experience in performing root cause and failure-mode analysis.

Experience in leading and/or participating in cross-functional teams.

Valid U.S. Driver’s license.

Other stuff we believe would be helpful…

Master’s degree in Engineering or Material Science.

California P.E. License.

Utility experience.

Performing root cause analysis using Material Science coursework.

Possess a high mechanical aptitude.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience developing and presenting technical and business presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Excellent computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Demonstrated knowledge of Distribution, Transmission and Substation standards and specifications.

Knowledge of General Order and Industry standards (e.g. GO95/128/165, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, ASTM), codes and practices.

Ability to complete assign task with minimum supervision.

Ability to take initiative and accountability while accurately analyzing information and making sound decisions.

Ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, project personnel, and all levels of management enterprise-wide to develop solutions and ensure stakeholder buy-in.

Strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.
