Position/Job Title: Force Design & Joint Integration Subject Matter Experts (SME)

Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Job Summary: Galapagos Federal Systems, LLC is looking to immediately fill the Force Design & Joint Integration Subject Matter Experts (SME) position. This individual will support the Space Warfighting Analysis Center's (SWAC) Force Design Integration Office (FDIO) in Colorado Springs, CO, with anticipated travel in support of the SWAC's priorities. The Force Design & Joint Integration applicant will integrate strategic guidance, operational scenarios, and SWAC-wide analysis into a cohesive Force Design at multiple classification levels on an annual basis. The Space Capabilities & Technical Integration applicant will be considered a technical SME in multiple space-related capabilities and must be able to understand complex analysis and conduct technical trades to create a cohesive, integrated Force Design at multiple classification levels on a recurring basis.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Not listed in order of importance; other duties may be assigned) and must be able to perform the following with minimal guidance:

  • Analyze Capability Area design options, and on an annual basis, develop a broad and integrated enterprise Force Design and Force Design Guidance that:
    • Incorporates Government leadership intent and national policy.
    • Addresses future National and Joint operational needs.
    • Mitigates / eliminates future threats.
    • Identifies enterprise gaps and prioritizes capability recommendations based on risk-to-mission and risk-to-force assessments.
    • Captures Enterprise level requirements.
    • Is cost effective and is technologically attainable
  • Rapidly access potential changes to the Force Design based on emerging threats, future operational needs; game changing technology and partnership opportunities; provide substantive recommendations based on systems engineering and analytic principles
  • Provide technical expertise to ensure that Force Designs can be successfully implemented; understand hard technical limitations, trade-offs, and opportunities with new space system capabilities; identify key dependencies within and outside of USSF Force Designs and Architectures
  • Garner insights and identify shortfalls from complex analyses across the space enterprise. Analyze modeling and simulation results and provides recommendations on potential improvements to current and future systems. This includes, but is not limited to shaping assumptions, identifying shortfalls, and providing Force Design recommendations from key studies
  • Explore and analyze innovative ways to employ new space capabilities in support of the joint warfighting community.
    • Awareness of modeling and simulation (M&S) capabilities and limitations; inform and evaluate M&S/assessments to inform the Force Design
    • Support the development of Joint Campaign Scenarios and integrate space scenarios into Joint M&S capabilities
    • Maintain OSD scenarios and Joint Force Design drivers
    • Perform trade studies, and other forms of analysis to predict performance and to optimize design around complex requirements
    • Support external M&S and analysis activities with the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD), the Joint Staff (JS), other Combatant Commands (CCMDs), USSF agencies, and Other Government Agencies
  • Identify future threats to USSF systems and implications on the Force Design based on community assessments
  • Support the development of operational concepts for the integration of sister Service space capabilities into the Joint Force Design
  • Interact with Higher Headquarters to compile primary DoD-accepted Joint Scenarios, vignettes, mission threads and assumptions
  • Discover and document user capability needs, capability gaps and technology gaps
  • Provide in-depth knowledge of game changing S&T opportunities and limitations; Prioritize S&T investment recommendations
  • Be familiar with strategic guidance documents that provide direction and guidance to the Joint Force for planning, programming, and execution of operations. Strategic documentation of interest for the Space Force includes, but is not limited to, the National Defense Strategy (NDS), National Strategy for Space (NSfS), National Military Strategy (NMS), Defense Space Strategy (DSS), Capstone Concept for Joint Operations (CCJO), Joint Operating Concepts, etc.
  • Support the SWAC in preparing the CSO and the Space Staff to interface with the DMAG, Tri-Chair, Tank/OpsDeps/JCS, FCB/JCB/JROC, and JFDD Integration Board (FDDIB) for directing, prioritizing, and aligning JFDD activities and validating joint requirements across the Joint Force, within the strategic framework established in the NDS, NSfS, NMS, DDS, and CCJO
  • Plan and execute Force Design integration forums
  • Other duties assigned.

Education and/or Experience -

Force Design Integration & Joint Integration SME Requirements:

  • STEM Bachelor's Degree (STEM Master's Degree highly desired)
  • Strong technical background
  • 10+ years joint Space operations experience
  • 4+ years Joint Operational Planning / Joint integration experience (DIRSPACEFOR highly desired)
  • Space Force Design/Architecture development experience
  • 5 years of Commercial Space
  • SAASS or Space Weapons School Graduate (highly desired)
  • Strong communication skills (technical writing, developing presentations etc)
  • Experience with DoD, IC and Commercial Satellite systems in SCI/SAP environment; experience with tactical ground satellite systems.
  • Ability to develop and present to SWAC leadership decision quality briefings and papers
  • Demonstrated problem solving/critical thinking in complex and dynamic organizational environments
