Weld County Sheriff's office is seeking a professional Criminalist II (DME).

The Criminalist II is a civilian employee of the Weld County Sheriff's. This is the senior, specialist, or lead-worker level of the series.

Perform complex analyses on physical evidence in criminal cases submitted to the forensic laboratory. Interpret analytical results, prepare written opinion reports, and testify as experts in courts of law. Complex analysis involves casework where applied research, method modification, or a unique approach may be necessary; or a single definite conclusion is not possible, and a weighted conclusion is warranted; or casework requiring the reconstruction of an event or series of events based on the interpretation of physical evidence.

NOTE : Some positions in this category are investigative in nature and may be held by sworn officers. These positions may conduct field investigations, write search warrants, or conduct internal investigations of alleged crime committed by officers or other offenders. In addition to the standards set forth as a criminalist, Sworn Officers will additionally be held to the standards that go with that position.

Document and protect evidence according to laboratory procedures, ensuring that the chain of custody is maintained.

In an assigned forensic science discipline, examine and analyze evidence in complex case requests where interpretations could lead to less definitive weighted conclusion, selecting appropriate methods, techniques, and instruments.

Prepare detailed investigation and laboratory reports; assemble and organize statements, evidence and exhibits for presentation in court and before grand jury; and attend court and grand jury proceedings and present evidence and provide testimony effectively based on expert opinion of findings.

May respond to requests for assistance at crime scenes.

Provide peer review and participate in proficiency testing to maintain expertise.

Utilize computerized data entry equipment and various word processing, spreadsheet and/or file maintenance programs to enter, store and/or retrieve information as requested or otherwise necessary and summarize data in preparation of standardized reports. May utilize a specialized computer database for evidence comparisons.

Train law enforcement personnel and community groups in proper techniques and procedures of recognition, collection and preservation of physical evidence and general Criminalistics. Prepare and conduct classroom and field instruction and demonstrations.

Assist the District Attorney's office in preparation of specialized diagrams or other displays for use in trials resulting from activities at major crime scenes or in the course of analysis of casework.

Review professional journals and current bulletins and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in forensic investigation methods and techniques.

Assist with the annual budget proposals in coordination with the Laboratory Director, including analyzing past and future expenditures to determine needs.

Assist in maintaining maintenance of instrumentation and equipment within section. Maintain a clean, professional workspace, and helps prioritize caseload.

Ensure quality of all lab work and maintain records of all actions.

Skilled in the recognition, collection, preservation and analysis of digital multi-media.

Proficiency in the use of commercial forensic software suites, such as EnCase, Forensic Toolkit (FTK), X-Ways Forensics, Cellebrite, XRY or similar applications is preferred.

May be tasked to document, collect and preserve evidence at crime scenes.

May perform scientific research.

Attend seminars, conferences, workshops, classes, lectures, etc., to enhance and maintain knowledge of trends and developments in the field of criminal investigations, law enforcement administration and forensic investigation methods and techniques.

Seek certifications in applicable disciplines.

Serve on committees as required.

Perform other related work as required.

May supervise lower level staff in setting up workload schedules or "rush" case assignments.

MINIMUM QUALFIFCATIONS

Education/Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in computer forensics, computer information systems, or a closely related field.

OR

Four years of experience performing digital examinations and/or laboratory duties associated with the processing of digital evidence in a law enforcement agency.

There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer's responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses/certifications are obtained for each position. Certification expenses will be paid for by the employer.
