The City of Littleton Police Department has an opening for a Parking Enforcement Officer to enforce parking regulations in the downtown area of Littleton. The Parking Enforcement Officer issues citations to drivers or vehicles that are found to have violated parking regulations. This position requires heavy public contact on the streets and within the Department and assists other department personnel with a variety of police-related administrative tasks as required.The ideal candidate enjoys interacting with the public, has the ability to maintain a calm, professional demeanor, and is able to appropriately deescalate tense or hostile encounters. Those who do not apply by this date may or may not be considered.ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operates a city vehicle and/or walks to patrol streets in the assigned downtown and surrounding area daily including RTD parking lots and city public parking.

Marks tires of parked vehicles with a chalk-making device to establish a vehicle parking time. Writes parking violation summons to vehicles.

Enforces sections of the Model Traffic Code relating to standing vehicles, vehicle loading, fire lanes, and related sections.

Provides credible testimony and maintains credibility in order to testify, prepare and introduce evidence in court in support of summons issued.

Provides information and assistance daily to businesspeople, vehicle drivers, passengers, and pedestrians regarding parking regulations and other police and city services. Reports any criminal or suspicious activity by radio.

Enforces the traffic regulations prohibiting parking on designated streets for street-cleaning operations on the average of two days per month. Assists with parking enforcement at special events and locations as assigned.

As needed, assists staff members of the police department with entering data by computer for the Crime Prevention Bureau; assisting the Police Laboratory Technician in moving supplies, and assisting police records employees by filing reports and entering data.

May serve as an Emergency Worker.

Performs other similar assignments and projects as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent; and

Experience working with the public, compliance and enforcement, compiling data and writing reports; parking enforcement or other police operations or law enforcement administrative experience preferred.

An equivalent combination of education, training and work experience that produces the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of the position may be considered.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Must be able to pass a pre-employment criminal background check, motor vehicle records check, drug screen and physical.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with parking enforcement and police operations

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Requires basic knowledge of the principles and practices of governmental regulation and the skill and ability to read, understand, interpret, and apply the applicable provisions of the Model Traffic Code, the City Code, City Ordinances, and other regulations of the Littleton Police Department and the City of Littleton to perform the essential functions of the position.

Skill and ability to write parking violation and related notices and reports

Skill and ability to complete the required parking enforcement routes within the time allotted by schedule and the skill and ability to operate the assigned vehicle and a chalk-marking device to mark the tires of vehicles.

Requires the skill and ability to establish and conduct verbal communication with customers, both in-person and using a portable two-way radio.

Skill and ability to effectively interact with motorists, citizens, and businesspeople who may be hostile, angry, uncooperative, and argumentative and deescalate appropriately.

Basic knowledge of and the skill and ability to operate a personal computer with appropriate software.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Essential duties are performed outdoors that includes exposure to extreme heat and cold with or without temperature changes; vehicle and traffic hazards; wind, sun, snow, hail, rain; vehicle and street noises up to 130 decibels occasionally; vehicle emissions, fumes, dusts, pollens, molds, and insects. Minimal work is performed indoors in a standard office environment.

The laboring activities of this position include occasionally moving objects weighing up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
