Job Title: Salmon Empowerment Project Coordinator/Advocate

Hours: 32-40 Hrs/Wk

The Mahoney House is a non-profit organization located in Salmon, Idaho with a mission to stop, prevent, and heal the effects of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and bullying in Lemhi and Custer counties. In 2017 the Mahoney House created the Salmon Empowerment Project (SEP), a youth mentoring program that provides opportunities for the areas next generation to experience outdoor adventures, engage in character development, and to enrich the Salmon Valley by giving back to the community. This group of boys and girls, grades 6-8, meet once per week year-round to partake in a variety of activities followed up by group discussions that focus on strengthening character and building healthy relationships. Through this program, the Mahoney House believes it can help end the cycle of violence and drug use in the community while promoting the many outdoor recreational opportunities the area has to offer.

We are looking for an energetic, dynamic person to join our team who can help implement SEP, work as an advocate for survivors of violence, and help carry out the overall mission of the organization. Although we are a small organization tasked with a big job, we work hard to create a supportive, positive, flexible working environment with an emphasis on self-care. This person needs to be able to maintain a good attitude and sense of humor while being able to collaboratively tackle tough issues. A passion to create social change is a must!

SEP Responsibilities:

— Leads youth in outdoor activities such as biking, hiking, kayaking, and skiing

— Assists in program planning, coordinating activities, and communicating with parents

— Facilitates discussions with participants on issues such as self-confidence, healthy coping strategies, dating violence, and positive self-image

— Maintains outdoor equipment, vehicles, and SEP supplies and equipment

— Uses social media and technology to market program and increase community support

Advocacy Responsibilities:

— Works directly with survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking. This includes attending meetings, medical appointments, and court appearances with survivors and making referrals to appropriate resources and services

— Helps manage the 24-hour crisis hotline and handles phone calls and walk-ins at the Mahoney House

— Ensures that client records, essential paperwork, and documentation are updated and accurate

— Participates in the education and training opportunities

Qualifications:

— Is experienced in hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and other physical outdoor activities in mountainous terrain and in inclement weather

— Physically able to lift 50 pounds and be outdoors 8 to 10 hours at a time

— Knowledge of bicycle maintenance and certification in Wilderness First Responders and swift water rescue is preferred

— Has a degree in teaching, social work, outdoor recreation, or other related field or has at least two years working with youth in an outdoor setting

— Is comfortable with speaking in public, especially to youth, about difficult topics

— Passionate about making a positive change in our community and working to end the cycle of violence

— Has strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills

— Is able to implement plans and adhere to schedules

— Is able to take initiative and work independently as well as with a team

— Is sensitive to the needs of people, tolerant of diverse lifestyles and values, and communicates well across cultural and educational barriers

— Understands the complexities of working within a small, rural, geographically isolated community

— Proficient with technology and social media outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, etc, and has basic video editing skills

— Understands and complies with strict rules of confidentiality, policies, and procedures

— Will travel for off-site meetings, training, and seminars

— Available to work evenings and weekends when needed

— Passes a background check, has a valid drivers license and clean driving record
