Job Description

This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and growing in-house legal department in a critical and high-impact role.This position reports to the Associate General Counsel and has day-to-day responsibility for handling all claims that impactthe Company in the North America region as well as supporting claims functions in other geographies.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Investigate, evaluate, and manage all general and product liability claims and consumer complaints that contain an element of a loss (property and/or injury) and/or an allegation of a product performance issue through resolution.
  • Responsible for all communications with consumers, claimants, their attorneys, and insurers.
  • As part of the claims process, securing all products related to claims/consumer complaints from claimants/consumers for examination by BIC’s Quality Team and collaborating with the Director of Quality in identifying BIC’s liability position; and to also identify possible quality trends and issues.
  • Support claim functions for other BIC entities in other geographies.
  • Support all workers’ compensation claims in the United States in collaboration with BIC’s insurers.
  • Manage and investigate all accident/losses related to the company auto fleet, coordinate with insurers and company vehicle custodians and related vendors. Directly negotiate and resolve all claims within BIC’s deductible.
  • Responsible for CMS (Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services) compliance in accordance with mandatory reporting requirements related to claims reporting.
  • Support BIC’s Risk Management team in claims related functions for the reporting of claims to BIC’s captive insurer and excess insurers, and insurance renewals. The support includes preparing applications, supporting renewal process, processing/providing claims data, as needed.
  • Investigate gray goods and counterfeit product issues arising through consumer claims, supporting related litigation or regulatory actions.
  • Miscellaneous – identifying and addressing claims-related risks as needed; e.g.; COVID and remote work impact on workers compensation program.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 5-7 years of claims handling experience in multiple lines, e.g., liability, workers’ compensation, auto; includes complex and broad types of claims and jurisdictions, including international claims
  • Experience with insurance defense and insurance coverage related issues
  • Connecticut or other state Casualty Adjusters License preferred, All-Lines Adjusters license preferred, professional designations (e.g. AIC, ARM, CPCU, etc.) beneficial
  • Comfortable dealing with adverse parties, strong negotiation skills with impeccable judgment, and an ability to escalate issues when needed
  • Demonstrated ability to guide multiple objectives and initiatives simultaneously
  • Ability to operate as a team player who can effectively work with legal staff and collaborate with business partners across the company
  • Sound and practical business judgment
