SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The Principal Software Engineer is an expert in IT development, delivery, and operations. The position entails looking at the applications and services holistically providing an integrated framework based on business rules. Daily tasks include leading multiple work streams across associated platforms creating applications and services serving specific AMTRAK domains. The role requires this Architect & Technologist to define the application design and delivery adhering to a Service Oriented Architecture paradigm so that different components work seamlessly.

The Principal Software Engineer works on major programs (EAM, WCMS, Yard workflow) providing subject matter expertise and technical direction and is also responsible for systems analysis, systems landscape dependency mapping, design, development, integration, and enhancement. The role works closely with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. These solutions must be aligned with business and IT strategies and follow the organization's architectural standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Leads development team in technical design and implementation, ensuring the end results meet business requirements.
  • Drives the development of services to be exposed as API's leveraging management platform.
  • Leads the development work streams responsible for creating compliant platforms.
  • Organizes and documents technical requirements. Creates technical design specifications and assists in sizing technical requirements.
  • Works with customers to develop and analyze application packages and tools and determine optimum functionality requirements to meet those needs.
  • Provides multiple recommendations for the solutions.
  • Evaluates existing applications and platform and provides recommendations for system enhancements by conducting gap analysis, identifying feasible alternative solutions, and assisting in the scope of modifications. Participates on teams that outline the process and scope out the improvements that can be realized through the application solution.
  • Implements integration plans. Interfaces with testing teams to incorporate plans into integration testing process.
  • Defines, develops or modifies software application modules or enterprise-wide software systems using disciplined development processes. Identifies better sources of data feeds and interfaces with architects to ensure their feasibility with corporate data warehouse when needed.
  • Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and SLAs.
  • Provides technical guidance or system process expertise. Develops reports and presentations for senior management, as needed.
  • Act technical solution designer for the Maximo Enterprise Asset Management system as well as the interfaces with SAP ERP, Timekeeping, and other supporting partner systems in Amtrak's ecosystem
  • Work with Implementation Vendor to drive innovative technical solutions to meet the client's functional requirements within the available capabilities of the software
  • Support the mandated tenant of zero customizations, cloud first, mobile first while maintaining Amtrak IT standards and vision
  • Providing domain expertise around all areas of system architecture and software development with a focus on Mechanical, Engineering, Real Estate and facilities management systems preferred.
  • Understands and enforces the efficient design and configuration of system security and access, including cloud and mobile solutions
  • Help define the EAM vision based on system functionality and business needs, continuing to look for opportunities on ways to expand the portfolio
  • Support other initiatives for Ops Mgmt. systems for Data Analytics & Optimization across various projects for wayside detectors & yard workflow .
  • Works on programs that may span a broad range of systems. Requires expertise in multiple technology domains and possesses an increased level of business knowledge.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or business management - or equivalent work experience

10 to 12 years of relevant technical experience in a leadership or a Subject Matter Expert capacity.

Extensive experience programming and/or systems analysis experience. Have a broad level of understanding surrounding information systems and application architecture standards.

Extensive experience in design, development and operation of internet scale web applications leveraging IaaS / PaaS / SaaS delivery models.

Experience in API Engineering for both REST and SOAP based services.

Strong object-oriented programming skills preferably in Java / J2EE, Spring, Hibernate

Ability to work well under deadlines and in a flexible environment.

Strong understanding of Service Oriented Architecture tenets, and N tier architecture deployments models when it comes to deploying against cloud-based platforms.

Must have leadership skills, experience/in-depth knowledge of business operations and systems requirements processes including ability to measure short- and long-term business goals.

Must possess the ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language.

Must possess the skill to educate project team members on business unit goals and objectives and educate the business on the value of information technology.

Ability to identify, propose and oversee the execution of business solutions as well as interpret

documents communicating business needs and requirements.

Must possess the skill to assess the client needs through direct interaction and identify opportunities to develop the business through effective use of technology.

10+ years of hands on, technical and functional experience with Maximo including designing, developing, and implementing high quality modifications, interfaces, conversions, and business process changes for Maximo systems

IBM Certified Professional - Maximo Asset Management V7.6 or later version (preferred)

5+ years of experience implementing the Maximo product in a transportation or Operational-heavy industry

The successful candidate will have proven experience with:

Web protocols including HTTP, SMTP and LDAP.

Knowledge of administration of database and web server components.

Modern programming language experience SQL, Java and/or C.

Experience with methodologies and technologies such as HTML, CSS, XML, and JavaScript, Oracle, RDBMS

Configuring IIS, WebSphere, and Maximo Asset management suite, Spatial, Building Information Models (BIM), Anywhere Extensions, SAP

Relational database table structure and design principles.

Maximo integration technologies (Object structures, services, channels, etc.).

BIRT, Actuate, Cognos and other proven Business Intelligence Reporting

Maximo integration with other applications.

Good working knowledge of Tableau & any other Data analytics tools

Working knowledge of AWS framework

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Excellent troubleshooting skills

Proven experience implementing or configuring Maximo in the transportation industry or an Operations-heavy company.

Proven experience integrating Maximo with SAP ERP, Siemens TeamCenter PLM, Quintiq, AutoCAD, Solidworks or other complementary third-party applications.
