SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Lead Business Analyst role will be a key contributor on a team introducing a data driven approach towards managing performance. This approach will have 4 primary areas of focus: Leads creation/maintenance of our analytical toolkits, creation of business processes to monitor performance, leads matrix initiatives to address performance opportunities and leads ad-hoc analysis. Initially the role will be primarily focused on building our analytical foundation with a focus on data aggregation, analytic tools selection and creating reports focused on data sense making that heavily utilize data visualization. With the foundation in place, the role will pivot towards developing reporting and interactive data for our state partners and internal stakeholders. While this role will have a significant design aspect - the function will also be responsible for the coding and maintenance of their work product and will be the go-to resource for understanding the underlying data.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Primary contributor to the creation of the departmental data foundation, this will require becoming an expert on multiple datasets across ops, commercial and finance
  • Develop/maintain repository of self-service performance reports for a variety of stakeholders
  • Go to person for team's more complex data needs
  • Create tools that can be used to identify performance improvement opportunities
  • Participate in performance management sessions to seed ideas for tool creation - then create it
  • Conduct ad-hoc analysis as needed - some of which may address business opp. vs. performance opp.
  • Working closely with the finance team, create financial models that allow stakeholder what-if analysis
  • Develop scalable tools and techniques to evaluate data and report results.
  • Identify opportunities and hypotheses for problem solving
  • Perform deep-dive analysis to supplement topline results and create a decision support framework.
  • Create visualizations to communicate business results for stakeholder review.
  • Conduct data validation and integration of data from internal Amtrak data sources as well as third-party sources.
  • Meet with stakeholders to formulate objectives and ensure tracking is in place to support these objectives.
  • Work with IT to design, enhance, and troubleshoot the data and applications used by stakeholders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS in business, computer science or quantitative field
  • Demonstrated experience SQL
  • Demonstrated experience Python or R
  • Demonstrated advanced experience in Excel
  • Demonstrated experience in an analytical role and creating analytical models
  • Demonstrated experience solving business problems
  • Demonstrated experience with data visualization
  • Strong analytical and commercial skills are the priority.
  • Strong data manipulation skills - expert level knowledge in excel and experience writing SQL. Experience with Tableau or other visualization tools a plus
  • Coding experience in a data analytics environment with Python or R
  • Technical fluency and an understanding of database structures
  • Takes ownership of opportunities and creates solutions
  • Effective communicator with the ability to distill complexity into plain language
  • Experience creating an approach / framework for addressing complex problems
  • Strong analytical skill set to identify root causes
  • Highly skilled communicator, that will utilize a variety of written and verbal mediums
  • Highly skilled interpersonal skills - will work across internal and external stakeholders who have expertise in all aspects of passenger rail
  • Highly skilled at organizing projects
  • Highly outcome oriented
  • Experience with query and reporting tools such as Business Objects

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA/BS in business, computer science or quantitative field
  • Masters in business, computer science or quantitative field
  • 3+ years work experience
  • 2+ years experience SQL
  • 2+ years experience Python or R
  • 2+ years advanced experience in Excel
  • 2+ years experience in an analytical role
  • 2+ years experience creating analytical models
  • 2+ years experience solving business problems
  • 2+ years experience with data visualization
  • Working knowledge of Business Objects, Tableau, and Salesforce's data models as well as Enterprise Data Warehouses
  • Experience in statistical analysis
  • Experience in data mining
  • Relevant work experience in the transportation industry
