Are you ready to join our team?SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The Senior Data Engineer facilitates the expansion and optimization of Amtrak's data architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams. This role collaborates with multiple software developers, database architects,data analysts and data scientists on business initiatives. The Senior Data Engineer works on major projects providing subject matter expertise and technical direction and is also responsible for systems analysis, design, development, integration, and enhancement. The position works closely with customers, business analysts and team members to understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:- Supports projects that may span a broad range of systems. Requires expertise in multiple technical environments and possesses an increased level of business knowledge.
- Creates and maintains optimal data pipeline architecture.
- Assembles large, complex data sets that meet functional/non-functional business requirements.
- Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements. Automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability.
- Builds the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using Structured Query Language (SQL) and Cloud Big Data technologies.
- Builds analytics tools that utilize the data pipeline to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency, and other key business performance metrics. Create data tools for analytics and data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing our product into an innovative industry leader.
- Works with data and analytics experts to strive for greater functionality in our data systems.
- Adheres to quality standards and procedures. Reviews modules for quality assurance and checks compliance with application architecture standards and SLAs. Defines development guidelines and standards to be utilized in software development/integration.
- May provides ongoing maintenance to applications.
- Support data ingestion and integration needs across multiple Amtrak service lines
- Deploy AWS solutions including advanced analytics in support of IT capital projects
- Serve as AWS consultant on data migration and workflow creation
- Enable business intelligence reporting and analysis through creation of conformed data in Enterprise Data Warehouse
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Management with 3+ years relevant experience or 7+ years of relevant work experience required to satisfy education and experience requirements.
- Extensive experience programming and systems analysis experience. Have a broad level of understanding surrounding application architecture standards, data analytics environments and tools that include:
- Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases, query authoring (SQL) as well as working familiarity with a variety of databases.
- Experience building and optimizing 'big data' data pipelines, architectures, and data sets.
- Experience performing root cause analysis on internal and external data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Strong analytics skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
- Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency, and workload management.
- A successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.
- Working knowledge of message queuing, stream processing, and highly scalable 'big data' data stores.
- Experience using the following software/tools or equivalence:
- Experience with big data tools o Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases
- Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools
- Experience with cloud services
- Experience with stream-processing systems
- Experience with both scripting and general-purpose, objectoriented programming languages
- Ability to work well under deadlines and in a flexible environment.
- Must possess the ability to utilize adaptable communication skills to effectively translate between technical and business language.
- Knowledge of analytics tools such as Tableau or SAP Business Objects
- Knowledge with big data tools: Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, etc.
- Experience with SQL/NoSQL databases, including Postgres, Cassandra, MongoDB, etc.
- Experience with data pipeline and workflow management tools
- Experience with AWS cloud services: EC2, EMR, RDS, Redshift, etc.
- Experience with both scripting and general-purpose object-oriented programming languages: Python, Java, etc.
- 5+ years of relevant experience
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
