HAZARDOUS WASTE SPOTTER (Solid Waste Division)This position is recruited and staffed with reSOURCE Government Services, not Marion County Government BoCCLocation: Baseline Landfill - 5601 SE 66th Street; Ocala, FL 34480 (will need own vehicle to move around within the landfill as needed)

Rate of Pay: $11.09 per hour

Work Schedule: 10 hours a day Monday-Thursday / Wednesday-Saturday rotating shift every 4 weeks or a Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday shift

Closing Date: May close without noticeMAJOR FUNCTIONThis position is responsible for the inspection of waste received at the landfill for hazardous waste and ensuring its proper disposal. This position ensures the safe flow of traffic within the landfill, ensuring that the public are kept at a safe distance from all heavy equipment. Inspecting all garbage loads for hazardous and flammable materials, keeping it out of the waste stream in compliance with FDEP permitting requirements.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following statements describe the principal functions of this job and its scope of responsibility, but should not be considered an all-inclusive listing of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including working in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods, or otherwise to balance the work load.Actively inspects and removes hazardous waste from all loads of solid waste disposed at the landfill. This includes waste such as reactive chemical, propane tanks, used tires, and appliances.Directs and educates residents and franchise haulers to provide correct disposal information, appropriate disposal areas and proper methods of disposal.Provide with precision, stacking directions for residential and commercial vehicles in close proximity to each other, into the working face of the landfill and transfer station for disposal purposes.Coordinate the stoppage of various activities within the Landfill and transfer station in order to pull hazardous waste materials from the waste streams.Report of all emergencies (fires/gas leaks) occurring, to the proper authorities; and contacting the proper manager/supervisor within a given time frame.Conduct quality control measure on various wastes coming into the landfill and transfer station to identify hazardous waste and its removal before it enters the waste stream.Attend classes and meetings for training certification, such as hazardous waste spotter and continuing education credits, meeting safety requirements.Practice a safety first policy in the work environment. Adheres to established safety and health policies and procedures to ensure a safe environment for self, customers, and other employees.Prepare daily log sheets to report tonnages from various equipment/vehicles/transfer trailers for correct billing and invoicing.Required to report to work at the appointed hour, as scheduled, and to work the entire assigned schedule.SECONDARY FUNCTIONSPerforms other duties as assigned.CUSTOMER SERVICEThis is a front-line position for providing excellent customer service to members of the general public and other County employees. Personal contact occurs with other employees of the unit, employees of other departments in the County, citizens, and customers of the department. Service is provided in person and by phone contact.SUPERVISIONThis position has no supervisory responsibility.EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONSEducation and ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED) preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.LicensesValid Florida Driver License.CertificationsHazardous Waste Spotters Certificate, NIMS training or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date.JOB SKILLSTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Includes the ability to build a constructive team spirit where team members are committed to the goals and objectives of the team.Machinery and EquipmentThis employee will be required to operate a telephone, fax machine, copy machine, and other general office equipment, as well as various tools, shovels, and a pickup truck.PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee will occasionally be required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and to lift up to 75 pounds; and frequently be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear taste or smell.WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will continually be exposed to wet or humid conditions; will frequently be exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions of extreme heat or cold, and vibration.
