SummaryAbout the Position: Martin Army Community Hospital was opened in 1958 and is named in honor of the late Major General Joseph I. Martin, Medical Corps. Fort Benning's MEDDAC, a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Medical Command, furnishes medical care to an eligible patient population in excess of 72,000 beneficiaries. This position is being filled under the Expedited Hiring Authority for Shortage Category and/or Critical Need Health Care Occupations.ResponsibilitiesIndependently perform standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking.Perform personal interviews to obtain medical histories and visual inspections of blood donors, ensuring donors meet all Food and Drug Administration criteria and current manufacturing practices.Screen subjects (volunteer blood donors, autologous, and therapeutic patients) donating blood and exercises care to ensure that their blood is at a safe level prior to being used.Screen candidates for autologous collections and exercises independent judgment to ensure phlebotomy procedures will not harm the donor.Receive and review test results ensuring that proper procedures are followed if irregularities or tests discrepancies are found.Process human volunteer apheresis donors to include taking donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and collection of single donor plasma platelets using apheresis equipment.Operate various computer systems to include the computer control blood bank management system.Perform specialized test on platelets for quality control in accordance with standards.Maintain legible and accurate records in accordance with regulatory requirements for all procedures to include test results, collection, preparation, processing, inventory, shipping and quality control.Keeps abreast of new developments in the field of immunohematology and of serological testing of donor units.RequirementsConditions of EmploymentQualificationsWho May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience:I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience in technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. Licensure/Certification: This position requires the employee to be certified and maintain certification for MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) with a recognized certification agency such as American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD(HA)) or their designee (CCLM).Note: You must submit a copy of your certification.EducationFOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
