IRTF Electronics/Control Systems Engineer

ID# 222345 Institute for Astronomy. Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Institute for Astronomy (IfA), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), located in Hilo, Hawai’i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY: Salary commensurate with qualifications.

DUTIES: Designs, operates, optimizes, and supports all IRTF observatory electronics motion control systems; including servomechanism and stepper motor tuning, industrial control system development (i.e. electro-optic assemblies, detector electronics, computer interfaces, vacuum & cryogenic technology, etc.), implementation, and optimization. Tunes on-site systems and troubleshoots instrumentation and observatory hardware problems. Designs, operates, optimizes, and supports all IRTF observatory environmental control systems. Develops low speed electronics used in motion control systems. Requires occasional travel between Hilo and Maunakea summit. Work may be required outside of standard work schedule with availability and flexibility for ‘on-call’ troubleshooting as needed.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/TRAININGBachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Electronic or Electrical Engineering.

EXPERIENCEFive to seven (5-7) years of responsible experience in electronics and servo systems design work.

KNOWLEDGEComprehensive knowledge and understanding of a wide range of developing and emerging concepts, principles, and methodologies of motion control, electro-optic systems, embedded control, sensors, and computer aided design. Knowledge and experience designing electronics for controlling motion control/servo systems. Extensive knowledge of higher mathematics and statistics applicable to the analysis of servo control systems and problems. Analytical and practical knowledge of mechanical devices and systems.

ABILITIES & SKILLSDemonstrated ability to define, design, and construct complete instrumentation and systems. Ability to work under time and budgetary constraints. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment to drive to work sites.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDSPost Offer/Employment Conditions: Must be able to work at 14,000 feet and pass a high-altitude medical examination.

SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of Very High-Speed Intergraded Circuit Hardware Design Language (VHDL), Cadence, Protel, servo and stepper motor systems, servo algorithm development, Xilinx and Altera Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA), electro-optic sensors. Thorough knowledge of systems documentation techniques including block diagramming, flow charting, and preparing technical, and operations manuals.
