Primary Purpose

Deliver Mahope project curriculum, teacher training, and student instructional units with a focus on math and science concepts and benchmark mastery.

Essential Duties

Mentor students during and after school hours;

Deliver after school curriculum;

Work closely with the curriculum specialist to revise and facilitate project-based learning activities that increase the after school curriculum rigor in science and math for grades 6-8;

Work with teachers, students, and program staff as facilitators, tutors, logistical support, record keepers, and math/science curriculum creation collaborators;

Maintain involvement in classroom and field educational experiences as a small group leader;

Collaborate with teachers in math/science curriculum implementation and review;

Provide feedback and communication to teachers, staff, and parents that will include but not be limited to student progress tracking and goal setting.

Other Duties Other duties as assigned including, but not limited to:

Produce web posts about the program;

Maintain site and equipment and;

Assist with program reporting.

Work Hours Monday through Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm or otherwise determined by the supervisor;

Position requires regular and predictable attendance;

Some nights and weekends may be required.

Working Conditions

Work at project office, schools where the project is scheduled and outdoor project field sites;

Travel in personal vehicle to and from program sites;

Travel to neighbor islands for extended stays as needed.

Equipment Use

Personal vehicle, computer and/or lap top, printer, scanner, copier, fax machine, office and/or work cell phone/Bluetooth, camera, scientific equipment.

Mental, Physical and Communication Demands

Mental:

Consistent adherence to the practice of MAF’s core values that are used as a guiding force in the success of all of its programs;

Must be keenly aware of and attentive to program participants;

Must be able to analyze and problem solve;

Must be able to multi-task and prioritize;

Must possess strong interpersonal skills.

Physical:

Must be physically fit and able to keep up with the student and teachers in sailing, gardening, hiking, and swimming;

Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. on a regular basis;

Must be able to sit and work at desk for extended period of time.

Communication:

Must exhibit courteous and professional demeanor towards program participants, staff and administration via verbal, written, physical, and electronic correspondence;

Must possess strong communication skills;

Must be able to maintain confidentiality.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Math, Science, Education, Hawaiian Culture or equivalent;

Experience in student or professional teaching in Mathematics and/or Science at the intermediate and pre algebra level;

Must be able to deliver creative and engaging projects that integrate the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards in the content of math, science, Hawaiian culture and language arts;

Familiarity with applied mathematics instruction to the algebra level;

Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Windows and Apple operating systems and iOS;

Some background in laboratory or field research greatly preferred;

Must have access to a vehicle, have a valid driver's license, a safe and responsible driving record, and current no-fault auto insurance, with at least $100K in bodily injury liability per person and $25K in property damage liability.
