ELS Language Centers/Honolulu, located on the downtown campus of Hawai'i Pacific University, is looking for teachers of English as a Second Language. Starting as Substitute Instructor or Temporary Associate Instructor (part-time for 10-20 hrs per week). Future Temporary part time opportunities leading to regular full-time positions may become available. Applicants must be available to work between 10-20 hours per week starting July 1, 2019 until at least July 26, 2019.

Classes are held in the morning and in the afternoon. We have a 12-level curriculum, using a communicative, learner-centered approach. Most of our students are international student visa holders and many of them plan to pursue higher education in the U.S.

Instructors must be available during one or more the following times:

10:40 am “ 12:30 pm, Monday - Friday

1:30 pm “ 3:45 pm, Monday - Thursday

Requirements:

BA/BS required, MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics preferred

Minimum 6 months experience teaching ESL

Strong background in grammar

Strong presentation, communication and writing skills

Basic computer skills

Ability to move from building to building between classes and across college campuses

SUMMARY OF POSITION

Reporting directly to the Academic Director, the Associate Instructor is responsible for planning, teaching and evaluating assigned classes in accordance with the ELS curriculum, with assistance from the AD, Instructional Specialists, Senior Instructors and Instructors; for maintaining student class records; for fulfilling administrative duties as required and/or requested by the AD; and for participating in professional development activities such as workshops and meetings.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

The Associate Instructor is specifically responsible for performing the following duties:

To teach SSP (Structure/Speaking Practice), Vocabulary Enrichment, Reading/Writing, Language Technology Center (LTC), and/or electives as assigned.

To prepare lesson plans, exercises and tests.

To test, evaluate and counsel the student regarding his/her classroom perfor¬mance.

To maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning.

To coordinate instruction, attendance records and evaluation with other teachers.

To become familiar with and adhere to Center and Company policy and procedures.

To complete administrative paperwork, both on a computer, and offline as required or requested.

To maintain performance and attendance records.

To maintain Center resource materials and files.

To refer non-academic problems to the appropriate person(s).

To observe other teachers, as suggested by the AD, for purposes of professional development and to be observed in all facets of the program.

To participate in administrative meetings and professional development activities.

To participate in the employee evaluation process (i.e., classroom observations and follow-up discussions and the performance appraisal process).

To participate in activities during the Associate Instructor's scheduled class hours and, when requested, to disseminate information about after-class activities.

To contribute to the maintenance of neat classrooms and a neat staff workroom and staff lounge.

To substitute in emergency situations for less than a full day (assuming the Associate Instructor is not already teaching a full day) when there are no reasonable alternatives available to the AD.

To move from building to building between classes and across the college campuses with teaching materials.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

The standards of performance for the Associate Instructor are met when the Associate Instructor:

Prepares his/her students to meet the academic objectives and requirements of the level as stated in the appropriate instructional manuals, and advances students who meet those same objectives and requirements.

It is observed that class objectives are defined and are being met through lesson planning, exercises and testing appropriate to the level and subject matter. Lesson plans, exercises and tests are prepared for substitutes as necessitated by absence.

Tests and evaluates his/her students on required material so that all evaluations are substantiated and students are informed of these evaluations, in accordance with Center procedures, throughout the course of the session.

Begins class on time, assures that only English is spoken in class, maintains student attention, maximizes student participation, demonstrates objectivity, cultural sensitivity and self-control, and maintains acceptable scores on the Instructor Survey.

Complies with all requests to coordinate instruction, attendance records and evaluation with other teachers.

Pursues and demonstrates, in practice, knowledge of Company and Center policies and procedures as set forth in Getting Started, Center orientation manual and student handbook.

Completes administrative paperwork accurately and on time as scheduled by the AD.

Can show the AD an up-to-date, accurate Enrollment and Evaluation Record (EER) or comparable report at any time during the session.

Borrows and returns Center resource materials and maintains files according to Center policy.

Demonstrates, in practice, the ability to refer non-academic problems to the appropriate person(s).

Consents to observing and to being observed in accordance with local policy.

Attends administrative meetings as scheduled. The Associate Instructor demonstrates the motivation to consistently improve his/her teaching skills through reading current literature, participating in in-Center staff development activities, and attending professional conferences as available and to the extent possible.

Participates fully in conjunction with the AD in the performance appraisal process which includes consultations, observations and setting mutually agreed upon performance objectives.

Present at all required Center activities during his/her regularly taught class hours. The Associate Instructor communicates information about activities to his/her students.

Assumes full responsibility for maintaining his/her own work/storage space (i.e., staff lounge, staff workroom, and classroom).

Assumes responsibility for classes on a substitute basis and demonstrates ability to carry out a lesson plan prepared by the absent teacher or AD.

Completes the ELS Phase I Teacher Training Modules.

Education

Required

Bachelors or better.

Preferred

Certificate or better in CELTA or related field.

Certificate or better in TEFL or related field.

Masters or better in Applied Linguistics or related field.

Masters or better in TESOL or related field.

Experience

Required

A minimum of six months of ESL teaching experience for those who do not have an MA in TESOL or Applied Linguistics, or CELTA.
