SUMMARY: The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will be responsible for the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light and heavy duty equipment, facilities, and vehicles ensuring that the company receives high quality repairs at reasonable costs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Test, Service, and Repair Vehicles and Equipment:
Operate diagnostic instruments; hand, electric, and air driven tools
Repair brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, air, exhaust, and chassis
Provide emergency field assistance and repair to disabled equipment and vehicles
Cut and weld metal; fabricate parts, frames, and related items
Perform body repair and related work or arrange to send out
Provide Preventive Maintenance:
Test and adjust or replace parts
Schedule preventive maintenance
Analyze and inspect equipment and vehicles
Determine most cost effective maintenance or repair
Purchase Parts and Supplies:
Purchase parts and supplies for repair and maintenance
Assist in budget development to provide adequate inventory
Assist preparation of bid specifications for vehicles and equipment
Provide technical support to staff members and contractors.
Fill out daily summary reports, work order and repair orders.
Work reasonable overtime as required to complete assigned tasks.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
o Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
o Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
o Thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; Considerable knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, fire pumps and valves, generators, and welding; price trends and grades or quality of materials and equipment; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities; Working knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools used in modern equipment maintenance.
o Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
o Ability to establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies and procedures; Ability to maintain effective accounting procedures; Ability to carry out assigned projects to their completion; Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, vendors and the public.
Ability to organize, analyze, interpret and evaluate problems and provide practical, cost effective solutions; ability to juggle multiple priorities; ability to communicate effectively with customers, co-workers, contractors and the general public, both orally and in writing.
Ability to plan, organize and monitor activities according to priorities, established schedules and deadlines.
Ability to apply common sense and good judgment to every day situations; ability to see all sides of an issue and use good judgment and common sense to effect win/win solutions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
o Valid Hawaii State Driver's License.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
o Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes, power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION/EXPERIENCE/OTHER:
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience - Sufficient years of experience as a journey level mechanic, including some supervisory experience, to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above; Education - Specialized automotive, equipment repair and/or supervisory courses.
Required certifications may vary depending on actual work performed.
