Palama Settlement is seeking a Program Specialist to oversee the Pakolea Program. Pakolea is a flagship program of Palama Settlement that utilizes sports participation as an incentive for academic and behavioral improvement and character development. The position is full-time, 40 hours a week which may include some evenings and weekends.

Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Recreation Division Director, the Pakolea Program Manager oversees the daily operations of the Pakolea program, including participating in all program related activities (i.e parent and community relationships/networking, youth recruitment, community outreach, youth mentoring, volunteer coach recruitment/training, tutoring, planning of outings and excursions, fundraising, and development of innovative approaches for the use of sports to help shape the lives of at-risk youth.

Essential Duties:

Behavioral Management/Improvement - Mentor youth regarding appropriate behavior, social-interaction/communication, and safe and healthy lifestyle choices. Work with parents/guardians to address behaviors that are not improving and/or getting worse. Encourage and arrange for youth participation in community service projects in the surrounding areas.

Academic Achievement/Improvement - Assist youth in the Leadership Center with school homework, questions, etc. while maintaining a structured and productive classroom environment. Develop academic and culturally competent activities for the Leadership Center, to serve as a complement to existing homework assignments.

Athletic/Sports Development and Coordination - Conduct outreach in the surrounding community to recruit age-eligible youth to participate in the various sports being offered. Recruit and mentor peer, adult and senior citizen volunteers for roles such as coaches, team aides, program assistants, and other needed support. Oversee the organization/coordination of Pakolea teams for participation in various youth sports leagues. Serve as coach for the various sports. Provide player transportation to games in agency vans as needed.

Education Qualifications: 4 year degree from accredited college/university required. Major in kinesiology or a human services field, desired. Knowledge of cultural competence and strength-based programming.

Experience: 2 years working with at-risk youth in sports or academic/behavior modification program. High school and/or collegiate experience playing/coaching football, basketball or volleyball.

Communication skills: Fluent in writing and speaking English. Public speaking skills desired.

Other: Licensed to drive an automobile in Hawaii, and access to an insured automobile. CPR/First Aid certifications desired. All conditional offers of employment are subject to background clearances.
