Hale Kipa is looking for a Summer Youth Counselor (temporary position) to work primarily with boys between the ages of 12-17, who are placed in the Emergency Shelter Program because they are experiencing some type of crisis. Youth can be referred by various referral sources such as, but not limited to: Child Welfare, Family Court, The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Division of the Department of Health, school personnel and they can self-refer. Length of stay in the emergency shelter is anywhere from 1 day to 30+ days, while youth wait for their next, more permanent placement. This is a temporary position, with a start date of May 28th and end date of July 31st. Days/hours: Monday “ Friday (inclusive of holidays) from 7:30am-3:00pm.

The Summer Youth Counselor will be responsible for creating a calendar of outings and activities for the youth to participate in during the summer months. There should be a mix of educational and cultural activities that are inclusive of spending time outdoors as well as indoors; and taking youth to places they might not otherwise experience. The intent is to provide the youth with productive and appropriate venues that will enhance learning, social skill building and development of positive coping mechanisms. And, of course, having fun is certainly part of the goal.

They need to provide a stable, safe, structured and nurturing environment; and spend time discussing issues with youth to assist and support them in their emotional processing. In addition to working with the youth, the Summer Youth Counselor is responsible for submitting required documentation in a timely manner, having some computer knowledge, and being able to navigate the electronic health record. Working as part of a team and possessing good communication skills, both verbally and written; and representing Hale Kipa in a professional manner, especially when taking youth out into the community, are imperative to the Summer Youth Counselor position.

Qualifications: High School diploma or GED; and 2 years of experience or training in working with children who have been abused or neglected.
