Coordinates and leads activities of assigned coding operations area. Ensures complete and accurate coding of professional services to include diagnostic and procedural information. Provides documentation review, coding, and data abstracting of medical and professional service documentation in conformance with regulatory guidelines. Leads, trains, coordinates, and reviews the work of assigned coders. Assists supervisor with coaching, mentoring and monitoring coding staff.Essential Functions:

Coordinates and leads activities of assigned coding operations area. Performs review and validates or assigns codes for level of service, diagnosis, and procedures. Initiates coding review of complete services rendered at encounter level if necessary.

Audits clinical documentation and coded data to validate documentation supports services rendered for reimbursement and reporting purposes.

Assigns codes for reimbursements, research and compliance with regulatory requirements utilizing guidelines. Follows coding conventions. Serves as coding consultant to care providers.

Ensures that all data abstracted is consistent with guidelines outlined by regulatory, regional and local policy. Performs ongoing peer review of select cases to ensure correct reimbursement for compliance. Identifies patterns, trends and variations in code editing and documentation practices. Assists in evaluation. Takes appropriate steps to affect resolution or explanation of variances.

Works with supervisor and appropriate staff to implement training and monitoring measurements. Assists in orienting, training, coaching, and mentoring of staff. Assists supervisor in monitoring and evaluating staff performance. Handles special projects as requested.

Basic Qualifications:Experience

Minimum four (4) years of coding, medical records, claims or billing area experience.

Education

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) required.

Successful completion of a professional AHIMA or AAPC sponsored/recognized coding course.

License, Certification, Registration

Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA); or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) by the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC).

Additional Requirements:

Experience with International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10 and ICD-9-CM), Current Procedure Terminology (CPT4), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding systems, and other related documentation requirements.

Demonstrated ability to understand the clinical content of a health record.

Knowledge of and experience in medical record department functions, diagnosis related groups, and prospective payment system.

Demonstrated leadership abilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in word processing, spreadsheet and database PC applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in business, health information management or related field.

Completion of an accredited Health Information Management program.

Knowledge in analysis, assembly, terminal digit filing, and physician's incomplete processing.
