Principal Enterprise Architect

Location: Buffalo Grove, IL

Summary:The Enterprise Data Architect’s role is to strategically design and implement data warehouses, data marts, and data stores, while ensuring high levels of data availability. This individual is also responsible for defining data standards and models for warehouse architectures. The Enterprise Data Architect will in addition evaluate and select all infrastructure components such as software, hardware, database management systems, and networking capabilities.

Responsibilities:

Strategy & Planning
  • Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for data warehousing in conjunction with data users, department managers, clients, and other key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and work with other technical staff to develop database architectures, and data coding standards.
  • Plan and implement capacity and resource expansion to ensure data warehouse scalability.
  • Design redundant systems, policies, and procedures for disaster recovery and data archiving to ensure effective availability, protection, and integrity of data assets.

Acquisition & Deployment
  • Conduct research and make recommendations on data warehouse products, services, protocols, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and select data warehouse components, including hardware, database management systems, ETL (extract, transform, load) software, data mining tools, and meta data management tools.

Governance
  • Assess and determine governance, stewardship, and frameworks for managing data across the organization.
  • Establish processes for governing the identification, collection, and use of corporate metadata; take steps to assure metadata accuracy and validity.
  • Establish methods and procedures for tracking data quality, completeness, redundancy, and improvement.
  • Ensure that data strategies and architectures are in regulatory compliance.
  • Develop and promote data management methodologies and standards.

Operational Management
  • Work with end users to identify, create, and deliver reports according to requirements.
  • Work with end users to understand data implications of reporting requirements.
  • Create logical models for new data warehouse development and/or changes to existing data stores.
  • Design and manage data warehouse improvement and growth projects.
  • Identify inefficiencies and gaps in current data warehouses and leverage solutions.
  • Identify data discrepancies and data quality issues, and work to ensure data consistency and integrity.
  • Diagnose and resolve data warehouse access and performance issues.
  • Install and configure relevant components to ensure data warehouse access.
  • Execute data warehouse configuration and performance tuning.
  • Analyze system details within the data warehouse, including stored procedures and execution time, and implement efficiency improvements.
  • Perform cost estimates for data migration between development, test, and production systems, and plan and coordinate these migrations.
  • Develop and implement change control for modifications to data systems.
  • Develop and implement testing processes for modifications to data systems.
  • Mentor and/or provide leadership to junior members of the team.

Requirements:
  • 5-8 years of overall experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in Information Technology with progressively increasing responsibilities.
  • 3+ years of experience in infrastructure systems design, implementation, and on-going support.
  • 5+ years modern data analytics technologies
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, systems analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience.
  • Azure, Microsoft, and VMware certification a plus.
  • In-depth experience designing, implementing, and supporting complex highly available infrastructure solutions.
  • Experience with architecting solution in Microsoft’s Cloud(Office 365, Azure).
  • SAP experience preferred.
  • Experience with validation in a medical device field preferred.
  • Knowledgeable in the design and construction of enterprise architectures that enable well-integrated transactional, collaborative, resilient and efficient systems.
  • Experience with cloud technologies: SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, cloud and hybrid cloud solutions.
  • Understanding of security by design concepts and how to integrate security into infrastructure to protect information.
  • Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technology and apply it to business needs.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills; ability to create original concepts/theories for a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience with selecting and applying technologies bringing about positive business outcomes.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills in areas such as teamwork, facilitation and influencing.
  • Demonstrates resourcefulness and creativity in solving architecture related challenges.
  • Ability to analyze project, program and portfolio needs, as well as determine resources needed to meet objectives and solve problems that involve remote and elusive symptoms, often spanning multiple environments in a business area.
  • Experience with various information modeling techniques (e.g. data flow diagrams, entity-relationship diagrams).
  • Basic knowledge of financial models and budgeting including ability to estimate the financial impact of technical architecture alternatives.
  • Ability to understand the long-term ("big picture") and short-term perspectives of situations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • English proficiency written & verbal.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills.
