Job Description

About the teamShopify’s IP Team is a small but growing part of our broader Legal Team, tasked with working closely with Shopify’s brilliant R&D teams to build Shopify’s IP portfolio (including patents and trademarks) and protecting our ability to innovate. In other words, we play defense so our R&D folks can play offense.

Our team’s mission is to build Shopify’s IP portfolio by doing as much of the heavy-lifting as possible so that R&D can stay laser-focused on shipping great products. This requires us to handle the paperwork and administrative burden independently, to keep R&D engaged. Success on Shopify’s team requires smarts, humility and a sense of humour. You are able to work with many different types of personalities, really connect with people and earn their trust and enjoy working as a team player. As a fully remote business, we are connected to each other in a variety of new methods while remaining true to our core mission.

About youAre you a highly organized individual with a background in patent administration support and ready for a new challenge?

We are looking for an Intellectual Property Coordinator to join our team. You have to be a service-oriented self-starter, with a background in patent prosecution administration (trademark experience is a bonus). This role is for someone who likes working autonomously and independently, is passionate about helping others to be more effective, and believes in technology as a way to increase efficiency and productivity. You will be interacting with every function of the team at every level handling and coordinating the patent process from vendor interaction to patent prosecution.

Are you ready to be an IP Coordinator and join the legal team? Do you want to be part of a small and growing team and witness innovation at its best? Join us and help us make commerce better for everyone.

Projects you could work on:

  • Managing the administration of patent and trademark portfolios

  • Coordinating with the IP team to manage the patent prosecution process

  • Coordinating new portfolio developments with inventors, such as new filings, publications and grants

  • Maintaining IP records, keeping track of deadlines and generating reports

  • Preparing correspondence and liaising with external counsel

  • Handling all incoming and outgoing correspondence relating to the patent and trademark process and triaging appropriately

  • Participating in patent review sessions and capturing outcomes

  • Improving upon current processes and streamlining tasks

  • Supporting and managing other projects within the legal team as they arise

Qualifications

  • Experience with US Patent and Trademark law and procedures (experience working with other jurisdictions as well is ideal).

  • Incredible organizational and time management skills. This role involves handling multiple projects/initiatives simultaneously and executing them to completion in a timely manner. You must be able to prioritize well, work efficiently, and demonstrate flexibility as workloads fluctuate with minimal supervision.

  • A proactive approach to solving problems. You have a hunger to learn and are genuinely curious about the way things work. If you don’t know something, you do your best to figure it out on your own.

  • The ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences about complex and technical situations using plain language.

  • Tons of patience and a strong customer service orientation. This role involves dealing with lots of business people moving very quickly.

  • Keen observation skills and a willingness to pitch in.

  • Sense of humour and the ability to thrive on change.

Bonus points if you have:

  • In-house patent and trademark administration experience.

  • Experience with Patent procedures and law outside of the US.

  • Experience with IP data platforms and web services.

  • A broad-based understanding of the ecommerce industry.

  • A curiosity and passion to develop knowledge in the bonus areas above.
