Job Description

The Vice President – Global Tax Reporting & Compliancewill be based in Chicago,report to the Head of Global Tax, and will be responsible for leading and directing all activities related to global tax accounting and the related internal and external reporting requirements of such, and the global outsourced tax return compliance processes. The ideal candidate will be a good communicator, build and retain a strong tax operations team, and provide leadership to create a best-in-class function capable of meeting NielsenIQ’s (“NIQ”) current and future needs.

Overall Responsibilities

Tax Accounting, Forecasting, and Compliance

  • Directly manage the preparation and consolidation of interim and annual income tax provisions for NIQ’s worldwide group of legal entities and prepare tax disclosures required for external reporting.
  • Ensure tax function complies with all Sarbanes Oxley requirements and provide all internal certifications necessary to document compliance with such internal controls.
  • Research appropriate tax accounting treatment for complex tax matters and proactively identify tax reporting and disclosure requirements in the financial statements.
  • Coordinate with other members of the Tax Department to provide the necessary expertise and abilities to delivery outstanding financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with the FP&A group to forecast NielsenIQ’s taxable income/loss, effective tax rate, tax payments/receipts, and utilization of deferred tax attributes.
  • Participate with tax planning professionals on acquisitions and business development projects to provide tax accounting expertise, ensure the appropriate deferred tax implications are reported in the financial statements, and tax forecasts accurately reflect new acquisitions.
  • Proactively communicate on the financial reporting implications of key transactions, operations, new projects, and legislative changes.
  • Manage the global outsourcing of income tax return compliance, and review of tax returns and estimated payment vouchers for completeness and accuracy.

Talent Management & Leadership – create a climate that fosters individual professional development and establishes a structure to meet or exceed expectations for the global tax operations function, including superior tax accounting and reporting.

  • Lead a team of 5 employees (1-2 directs/3-4 indirect) to fulfill NIQ’s vision and values.
  • Be a strong communicator both upstream and downstream
  • Recruit and retain top tax accounting talent.
  • Focus on effective teamwork within your team, the broader tax function, and internal customers within NIQ
  • Coach individual team members on professional development.
  • Set high standards and demand high performance with clear accountabilities.
  • Develop and manage to specific performance metrics and timelines.
  • Establish outstanding customer relationships within NIQ.
  • Direct outside service provider relationships on projects within your responsibility.
  • Be able to articulate value add activities.

Risk Management – Manage risk related technical tax positions and the operation of the tax function.

  • Train tax professionals in NIQ’s values
  • Exemplify the NIQ values as a leader within the Tax Department.
  • Establish clear processes and accountability to meet SOX requirements.
  • Maintain personal awareness financial reporting requirements applicable to NIQ.

Breakdown of tax specialty areas for the position

  • 35% Federal Tax
  • 55% International Tax
  • 5% State and Local Tax
  • 5% US Sales and Use/Property

Position Deliverables – Year 1

  1. Successful management of the quarterly and annual tax accounting process
  2. Successful oversight of the outsourced compliance process completed accurately and on time
  3. Identification of tax accounting process improvements
  4. Oversight on implementation of tax provision software
  5. Build strong relationships with cross functional groups in the accounting, treasury, and finance groups.

Candidate Profile

  • Minimum 12+ overall years of experience with a strong emphasis on tax accounting issues for complex multinational organizations
  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance preferred, CPA preferred
  • Experience with international tax accounting issues required
  • Must be proficient in Excel and have the ability to create complex models to enable scenario planning
  • Experience working with FIN 48 issues required
  • Solid background in US GAAP required and IFRS knowledge a plus
  • Experience managing the consolidated tax return process for a large multinational company
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to interface with multiple groups inside tax as well as across functional groups outside the tax function required.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and experience managing direct and indirect reports preferred.
