Database Administrator

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Ensure stable operation, performance, and availability of production database environments through proactive monitoring, maintenance, and management.

• Ensure CommVault and native database back up processes and schedules meet defined Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and that backups are routinely tested to ensure consistency and the ability to meet Recovery Time Objectives (RTO.)

• Provide 2nd/3rd level support, incident resolution, and monitoring alert response for the database environments.

• Participate in AlwaysOn Availability Group failover testing of High Availability and Disaster Recovery environments.

• Adhere to corporate policies in change management, incident management, and information security.

• Proactively identify tactical risks in the database environment and raise/resolve issues efficiently.

• Collaborate with IT and management teams to evolve the database environment to enable/sustain revenue growth, eliminate regulatory risk, and lower transaction costs.

• Create, validate, and augment hosted documentation on the configuration, infrastructure, and processes associated with data platforms.

• Grant application and user access to database environments.

• Experience providing support for production and non-production environments Knowledge of Continuous Intergration (eg Ansible, Chef).

• Assist with support of Oracle and PostgreSQL data platforms as needed.

• Preferably have experience managing Oracle Exadata hardware component failures, such as disk or flash drive failures, configuring storage cell features, functionality and cell maintenance operations

• Install and configure new database services, AlwaysOn Availablity Groups, virtual machines, and physical servers according to specifications and best practices.

• Deploy and test database patches, maintenance jobs, and change scripts in both test and production environments.

• Work with IT teams to configure and support development and test environments.

• Fulfill requests for ad hoc data exports and schema updates between production and non-production environments.

• Automate and streamline repetitive tasks.

• Process incoming change request tickets and provide high quality service to database users.

• Manage communication and foster relationships with IT managers, business users, project managers, and developers.

• Determine effective ways to increase server and/or database performance through index and code changes, configuration changes, and hardware purchases.

• Perform code reviews to optimize SQL code and proposed data structures while coaching developers on relational or reporting schema design principles.

• Participate in on-call rotation and after hours or weekend work for disaster recovery testing, production support, code deployments, and patching.

• Evaluate new features and products to provide innovative solutions.

• Enhance and support DevOps initiatives by applying best practices for continuous integration and deployment, source control, and automation.

JOB SCOPE

This role is for a database administrator who will provide support for a highly available Oracle and PostGres environments. This role is expected to understand the benefits and limitations of clustering, log shipping, mirroring, replication, and availability groups to meet business needs. The database administrator must be able to trouble shoot time sensitive production issues in a timely manner. Database monitoring tools are used to send alerts and must be fine-tuned to reduce false positives. The DBA will respond to failure notice alerts, emails, and escalation phone calls to fix production systems. Additionally, the DBA will serve as a technical manager & subject matter expert for the configuration, implementation, and maintenance of database processes and data access methods used in applications. The DBA will create and manage logical and physical Oracle and PostGres databases. This role works in coordination with teams of infrastructure engineers as well as working closely with development and support teams for optimal application/database interfaces. The position is responsible for 2nd/3rd level support of the Oracle and PostGres database environments and as such superior customer service is a key aspect of this role. The candidate will focus on Oracle and PostGres optimization but time permitting will also be involved with other aspects of shared services.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent degree/experience

• Minimum 6 years of experience as Oracle and PostGres database administrator

• Hands-on experience with Oracle and PostGres required

• Experience in supporting/designing data warehouse load, master data management, data quality controls processes preferred
