For more information, please visit us at www.xylem.com .If you are excited and passionate about helping us solve water, we want to hear from you!The Role: This project will look at developing a magnetic separator that can be used in conjunction with our existing Suction Diffuser, Rolairtrol, or Coalescing Air Separator product lines. With increased use of ECM pumping technology, it is important to remove magnetite or other ferromagnetic materials which may be entrained in the fluid, which is harmful to those systems.Essential Duties/Principal Responsibilities:

The Intern assigned to this project will become familiar with the AWS Engineered Specialties product lines and research competitive product offerings and other commercially available products, often working closely with Engineered Specialty Product Management. This information, in consultation with Morton Grove New Product Development Engineering and Manufacturing Engineering will be used to develop a design for the magnetic separator.

This project will involve and require understanding of fluid mechanics, basic magnetic principals, design of machine elements, mechanics of solids, hydraulic system modeling and simulation (CFD), and rapid prototyping capabilities.

The Intern will create CAD models of the needed parts, and use CFD, FEA, and other analytical tools to verify and optimize their concepts. They will work with Purchasing to source sample components for prototypes, Mfg. Engineering to have them assembled, and validate them in the Morton Grove R&D Lab. The Intern will further work with Purchasing and Mfg. Engineering to conduct a Should-Cost Analysis to aid in product commercialization.

Minimum Qualifications: Education, Experience, Skills, Abilities, License/Certification:

Bachelors of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent (In Progress)

0-2 years’ experience with product design.

Some exposure with common product manufacturing processes such as hot plate welding, heat staking, ultrasonic welding, potting and parylene coating Solid understanding of analog and digital circuitry

Some experience with 3D CAD modeling software and data management tools; Creo (Pro Engineer) and Windchill preferred.

Ability to communicate effectively in writing, orally with both local and remote sites

Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment of engineers to meet aggressive goals and high quality standards

Demonstrated experience working with cross functional teams

The outcome of this project is to present a working prototype and completed design support documentation to the Engineering and Product Management teams at the conclusion of the Internship.
