Absolutely!As our global footprint continues to grow, we are looking for a Project Chemist to join our Fire Research & Development team in Northbrook, IL!In this role, you will work hands on evaluating pre and post ignition gases from thermal runaway events in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), study new semi / combustible refrigeration gases and analyze combustion products from fires in general. As a member of the team you will work directly with other UL business unit staff and our customers on their products by, working to conduct tests, collect and analyze data and provide written reports of the results. Having an ability to learn new techniques for analytical measurements, conducting literature searches, having a sense of curiosity and creativity will lead to the success of this role. You will be working daily with the Building and Life Safety Technologies staff directly and Fire R&D team to provide analytical measurements support.What you’ll learn & achieve:

Within a team environment perform tests to determine gas mixture component composition, levels and quantity of combustible / explosive gases, constituents of smoke and other chemistry determinations resulting from overheating and fires.

Initiate communication with internal clients and participate in external discussions with customers / suppliers to advance UL’s existing and new services. Follow up on contacts from suppliers. Communicate to discuss technical issues, understand UL procedures and requirements, help to develop project costs, and determine completion date and sample requirements. As part of a team, act to address client concerns and to resolve issues. Provide technical assistance to in reference to methods, techniques and procedure.

Perform laboratory activities by coordinating equipment, lab and staff availability, preparing data sheets and conducting tests. Serve as data generator of record and sign as individual of record as assigned.

Communicate project status and results to staff and clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports. Prepare data sheets, test records and portions of test reports.

Integrate continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.

Resolve issues associated with the conduct of tests by analyzing the situation, developing resolutions and working with the team and customers to effect a solution.

Participate with the development of new and/or revised UL requirements. Develop special test methods and test equipment. Coordinate shipment of samples to outside vendors.

Work with fellow fire R&D team members, other business unit technicians and engineers, Primary Designated Engineer (PDE) or other individuals responsible for business development.

Share knowledge to office, field, laboratory staff and entry-level engineers. Provide technical assistance to the team.

Perform other duties as directed.

What makes you a great fit:

University Degree in Chemistry, Chemical or Environmental Engineering or other related discipline. Work experience with GC, GC-MS, FTIR, and other analytical measurements is preferable.

Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.

Working knowledge of standards in area of expertise.

Working knowledge of:

GCMS - Thermo Scientific ISQ 7000 Trace 1310

Chromeleon 7 software

Pyrolizer

Autosampler

Demonstrated ability to apply project-handling concepts in use in area of expertise.

Willingness to work hands on and extended hours when required.

Physical requirements include lifting and manuevering samples.

Projects may include infrequent travel to conduct or witness tests at sites other than the UL Northbrook campus.
