Job Description The Cloud Data Enablement team is looking for a Principal Software Engineer who is passionate about building products that help Discover achieve the next level of growth in Data Analytics. An engineer in this role develops and maintains full stack solutions to fit business needs. Full stack solutions require one or more of the following: front-end (user interfaces), back-end (APIs), and database development. As the lead engineer, you will be responsible for architecture, design and implementation of reliable infrastructure services on AWS.

An engineer in this role works independently or with the team to innovate and advocate for best practices within the team. Primary responsibilities include working with the product team to architect complex solutions across large cross-functional enterprise teams, troubleshooting production issues, designing complex solutions and delivering code from development through production, updating/enhancing current products, automation of support processes and documentation.

The ideal candidate must be detail oriented, have superior verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, able to juggle multiple tasks at once, able to work independently and can maintain professionalism under pressure. You must be able to identify problems before they happen and implement solutions that detect and prevent outages. You must be able to accurately prioritize projects, make sound judgments, work to improve the user experience.

Responsibilities
  • Leads the design and development of technical solutions that have significant strategic, long-term impact on the business and achieves competitive advantage for Discover.
  • Contribute code to build tools and infrastructure, set an example for building scalable, testable code with as little future maintenance as possible to help other engineers get their work done faster, with better visibility and higher quality.
  • Actively engage in design and architectural reviews for infrastructure and tools that enhance engineering productivity and efficiency
  • Provide recommendations to monitor, measure and improve all aspects of the SDLC
  • Adopt and influence domain driven design and architecture principles of security, scale, uptime and reliability
  • Develops and maintains complex front-ends with a focus on user experience
  • Develops and maintains backend systems
  • Uses holistic knowledge of all products in the team's ecosystem to plan how new systems will be built and integrated
  • Innovates on and advocates for best practices and improved processes within the team and with internal partners; stays up to date with technology trends and innovations; mentors team members
  • Creates and maintains DevOps processes, application infrastructure, and utilizes cloud services (including database systems and models)
  • Supports live systems to ensure business continuity

Qualifications You'll Need

The Basics:
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology or related field
  • 8+ years of experience in computer science, information technology or equivalent experience
  • In lieu of degree, 10+ years of experience in computer science, information technology or equivalent experience

Bonus Points If You Have:
  • Experience contributing to the architecture and design (architecture, reliability and scalability) on new and current systems.
  • Experience developing, deploying and maintaining large-scale Cloud-native solutions.
  • Experience developing and implementing API service architecture
  • Strong experience of developing multi-threaded and synchronization application
  • Build secure web applications with user authentication
  • Understanding of software testing principles and methodologies
  • Hands on experience with AWS services such as Glue, EMR, Lambda, Step Functions, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, S3, VPC, EC2, RDS, IAM
  • Experience building data pipelines to ingest data into data lake.
  • Experience as part of an Agile engineering or development team
  • Strong understanding of object-oriented principles with an ability to write clean code
  • Strong experience working with a relational database and NoSQL database
  • Strong experience with CI/CD pipelines with Jenkins or similar; Git /GitHub; Artifactory
  • Proven skills in high availability and scalability design, as well as performance monitoring
  • Experience in working in a cloud environment such as AWS, GCP or Azure.
  • Understanding of messaging systems like MQ, Rabbit MQ, Kafka, or Kinesis.
  • Experience with relational databases such as MySQL or Postgres and understanding of columnar data stores such as Redshift or Snowflake
  • Strong technical understanding of data architecture, data quality and related technologies
