Teacher or Tutor (Private Pod) (Iowa City, Manville Heights)

Iowa, Iowa city 00000 Iowa city USA

Vacancy expired!

Teacher or Tutor (Private Pod)

Iowa City, IA 52246 (Manville Heights Neighborhood)

$22 - $34 per hour

Overview

We are a group of families seeking an individual with teaching or tutoring experience to lead an in-person teaching pod for a small group of 6th and 7th graders who have chosen the fully online option offered by the Iowa City Community School District. The pod will be hosted in a dedicated, well-equipped space in a detached “carriage house” separate from one of the family’s homes. The space is well-ventilated and spacious enough to allow for appropriate distancing. There is also a covered patio that we would utilize when weather permits.

Make-up of Group

At minimum, the teacher will be responsible for four 6th grade boys. None of the boys have any diagnosed learning differences or behavioral challenges. Ideally, we would like to find a teacher who could also split time between the 6th graders and a similar group of 7th graders. We anticipate that periods of self-study and breaks for physical activity and lunch would make this arrangement feasible. Time would be divided between the grades appropriately.

Schedule and Term

The schedule would be 8am-3pm, Monday through Friday, starting September 8th. Parents will be on site at most times of the day to assist with supervision and provide any other support necessary. We are seeking a commitment at least through 2020 and possibly through the school year ending in spring 2021, depending on the public health situation in Johnson County. While our preference is to find someone who can make a full-time commitment, we may also consider part-time roles. Please explain your availability when you apply.

Responsibilities of the Position

We are open to a wide variety of backgrounds in who we may consider for the role. The right person could be a current college student taking a gap year or with a flexible distance learning schedule of their own, all the way up to a fun-loving retiree with teaching experience. However, all candidates should be able to fulfill the following responsibilities:

Curricula

Ability to follow and supplement teaching of 6th and 7th grade curricula, including math through Pre-Algebra. Materials will be provided by the students’ schools (ICCSD) and will be augmented with additional resources as needed.

Coordinate and Supervise Daily Schedule

Ability to develop and manage a daily schedule that enables the students to participate in any live virtual classroom sessions and digitally submit any completed assignments in a timely fashion.

Extend School’s Virtual Learning

Ability to supplement school assignments to ensure pod is moving through the year at grade level and to provide guidance beyond grade level should students show need and abilities to do so.

Promote Positive Learning Environment

Ability to create a positive, supportive and creative learning environment in a non-traditional setting for students who are used to being in a larger classroom and who will return to a larger classroom setting in the subsequent academic year.

Create Learning Experiences

Ability to think creatively and utilize not only traditional teaching methods, but also bring the desire to make learning fun and engaging. Opportunities for learning and recreation are readily available in our community outside such as the park, trails, downtown Iowa City, and the U of Iowa campus.

Requirements and Preferences

The right mix of engaging and personable while also organized and firm.

Bachelor’s Degree from accredited institution or degree in progress.

Experience and training in elementary and middle school education.

Iowa teaching credentials preferred, but not required.

Ability to commit to first half of the school year (September-December 2020) required.

Ability to commit to the entire 2020-2021 school year (September 2020 –May/June 2021) preferred.

Must be fully devoted to the pod during weekday daytime hours, with no other conflicting employment.

Must be able to travel to the pod site daily.

Must be willing to submit to a background check.

COVID-19 Precautions

Teacher must follow CDC recommended precautions regarding COVID-19 both during and outside of work hours. Participating families are also mindful of CDC precautions.

Compensation

Pay range of $22 - $34 per hour with possible benefits. Pay is intended to be competitive and will be determined and discussed based on experience.

Application

Applicants should please send a resume with an email describing your interest. Candidates interviews are currently planned for the week of August 31, 2019 with a September 8, 2020 start date.
