Behavior Specialist Job Description

KIPP Endeavor Academy

The

mission of the Behavior Specialist role at KIPP Endeavor Academy is to effect positive behavioral change in students by building relationships with students and families. They will do this by maintaining a calm, positive environment for students to reflect on their behaviors when they are removed from class and/or in the Wellness Lab.

Goals

● 90% of students who are removed from class complete a reflection

● 80% average walkthrough score on the Wellness Lab Rubric

● Additional performance and/or development goals set with the Dean of Students

The

primary roles and responsibilities of the Behavior Specialist are as follows:

● Escort the first three students removed from class each class period within 2 minutes of the removal being entered;

● Ensure that all students removed from class are in a safe, non-disruptive environment monitored by an adult within 5 minutes of the student being removed;

● Create and maintain a calm, positive environment in the Wellness Lab;

● Execute a system of reflection for students who are removed from class;

● Execute a tracking system for students who are removed from class;

● Maintain student Liveschool accounts by deleting demerits leading up to a removal;

● Attend a weekly 03 with the Dean of Students.

Secondary responsibilities,

shared with the Dean of Students, include:

● Use verbal skills to help students de-escalate when they are disrupting the school learning environment;

● Monitor assigned breakfast, hallway, lunch, dismissal, and other transition positions;

● Execute effective CPI conversations with students;

● Work with grade-level teams to identify effective intervention strategies for students;

● Model appropriate use of the school’s merit/demerit and other behavioral systems;

● Model detention expectations and systems for the school staff;

● Model appropriate behaviors, emotions, and communication skills, e.g., anger management, conflict resolution, and problem solving;

● Receive and respond to Liveschool updates via text and/or email;

● Collaborate with the school counseling and SPED teams for removals with students who receive SPED and/or University Health services;

● Build relationships with identified students and families receiving Tier 2 behavioral supports;

● Build and maintain community partnerships to support students with Tier 2 behavioral supports;

● Serve as an active member of the School Behavior Team.

Qualifications

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

● BS/BA (required) Masters (preferred) in psychology or sociology or related studies.● Strong active listening (i.e. seeks to understand the needs and motivations of students) and motivational coaching skills;● Excellent verbal and written communication skills;● Demonstrates knowledge of and respect for the cultures of the community served;● Demonstrates a growth mindset w ith the ability to inquire and be open to feedback;● Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;● An excellent team player;● Relentless drive to follow up and stay connected with students in order to help them succeed;● Outstanding project management skills, with an ability to manage multiple tasks and projectssimultaneously and meet agreed upon deadlines in a fast-paced environment;● Proven ability to collaborate and build relationships with stakeholders across functional andorganizational lines;● Demonstrates a high proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Drive, and has previousexperience utilizing a database, i.e. Salesforce, Microsoft Excel3 and a Student Information System.
