Overview: The Markey Cancer Center is seeking qualified candidates for a Linux system administrator to support a variety of cancer research activities. Our team develops and supports informatics applications used for population-based electronic cancer surveillance, database management systems, and electronic medical records (EMR) data capture in a Linux environment. A Systems Programmer, Senior is needed to configure, maintain, and secure advanced computing systems. These computing systems support Informatics research in machine learning and artificial intelligence. This is an exciting opportunity to engage in support for computationally intensive and cutting-edge cancer research.

Key Responsibilities Include:
  • Design and document specifications for advanced computer and network operating systems to support cancer informatics research for MCC s Cancer Research Informatics Shared Resource Facility.
  • Customizes open-source Linux operating system releases and utilities from manufacturer to provide optimal computing environment for research software development.
  • Evaluates new and existing third-party software applications and software development tools.
  • Evaluates, designs, documents, and implements cloud-based and High-Performance Computing (HPC) solutions based on project feasibility: cost, reliability, security, and performance.
  • Ensures the electronic security of network and computing facilities.
  • Manages statewide electronic cancer reporting network used to exchange patient data and large molecular datasets from hospitals, laboratories, and other sources.
  • Designs and documents systems used for multi-omics data exchange and analytics.
  • Tests and validates security of network, systems, and applications.
  • Consults with faculty and staff on the development and production of cancer informatics applications.
  • Monitors, remediates, and mitigates security risks for network, devices, servers, and other assets.
  • Ensures processes and solutions are secure and highly available to protect the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of assets.
  • Monitors and ensures systems revisions and patches are up to date.

Qualifications, experience, and skills required for consideration:
  • A Bachelor s degree in computer science or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Candidate should be highly self-motivated and organized, have a strong work ethic and desire to learn, and a demonstrated track record of productivity.
  • Previous experience with Linux, systems administration, systems security, and scripting.
