JOB SUMMARY:

The Academic Teacher of Youth Building Alternatives (YBA) is a front-line staff member who is involved in all aspects of a nationally accredited program that works with young men and women ages 16½ to 24 who have not had success in traditional school settings. The person in this role is part of a dynamic team of professionals who, together, manage components of a comprehensive academic, vocational, and career pathways training program. This position’s primary role is to provide instruction and support to students in a variety of content areas to further their academic development and assist them in reaching their goals, in most cases the successful attainment of the HiSET. This person will also assist and collaborate with the vocational teachers in their mission to promote student achievement in other key program areas.

This position contributes to the accomplishment of the Agency’s mission through the implementation of student-focused activities associated within the academic and vocational components of the YBA program: providing classroom and individual instruction, supervising program volunteers, and collaborating with colleagues. The Academic Teacher also participates in the YBA program through overseeing community service and leadership activities, serving as an advisor to a small group of students, supporting the career development program, engaging with external partners, and supporting alumni of the program. Additionally, duties may include administrative tasks such as the collection of student testing data, data entry and preparing reports.

The Academic Teacher works closely day-to-day with the Academic and Program Coordinator and is supervised by the YBA Program Director. The ideal candidate will have a deep well of empathy, be an excellent team player and have a good sense of humor. Experience working with young people in an academic setting as well as an understanding of the types of challenges facing young people in programs like YBA are certainly preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES: (essential functions of the job)

This position contributes to the achievement of the Youth Building Alternatives program’s mission through some or all of the following core accountabilities:

Collaborating in academic training and assisting in vocational and career development education, as needed. This includes: (1) developing positive, respectful, and appropriate rapport with students; (2) facilitate and individualize instruction; (3) creating a positive classroom environment and demonstrating effective classroom management; (4) leading academic lessons, and providing one-on-one or small group instruction to students, as needed; (5) differentiating instruction that addresses a variety of learning styles, and team teaching when appropriate; (6) integrating curriculum between components including vocational, career development, and life skills, as well as leadership development.

Assists in maintenance of some of the program’s academic and vocational records, including NCCER, HiSET, TABE, and OSHA for reporting and confidentiality purposes. Is able to effectively use a database.

Uses YouthBuild USA Program Standards, YBA curriculum, and a variety of other resources to support the classroom component and the program.

Participates in intake interviews with prospective students as necessary.

Assists in transportation of students as needed.

Contributes to program reports as needed.

Attends required meetings and trainings as required by Youth Building Alternatives and LearningWorks.

Performs such other related tasks and assumes such other related responsibilities as needed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Teaching certification preferred

Bachelor’s Degree in Education or a social service field preferred

WORK EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

Demonstrated experience working with young people is required. Experience in an alternative or adult education program or with special education is a plus.

Interest in training young people to acquire the skills they need to succeed in post-secondary education or the workforce in a supportive, patient, and enthusiastic manner.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment required.

Proficiency in the core academic areas tested in the HiSET.

Deep respect for the ideas and intelligence of young adults, with a strong commitment to their success.

Ability to interact with students, parents and staff in a positive and productive manner.

A commitment to all aspects of equity and inclusion in the educational setting as well as in the workplace and the larger world.

Ability to effectively educate and manage students from varying backgrounds and socio-economic levels.

Experience in effectively managing conflict.

Comfort speaking to groups for the purpose of training and program promotion.

Valid Maine Driver’s License. Incumbent must be able to operate a company motor vehicle to conduct LearningWorks business on a frequent basis to transport students, travel to appointments and meetings, or pick up supplies relative to the program.

Core schedule is 7:30a-3:30p M-F.
