SUMMARY OF MAJOR FUNCTIONVersed in most areas of laboratory office operations. Transports
specimens from client tot the laboratory as needed. Must be neat, well
groomed, courteous, and considerate of customer needs.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND WORK ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Must have and understanding of and utilize proper medial and
laboratory terminology in daily work. Performs any other essential
duties as assigned.
Treats clients sympathetically, courteously, and responds to their
concerns in a professional manner.
Responsible for logging all pick-ups at doctor offices following the
schedule, as well as various STATS requests, X-rays, and biohazard
transport specified by the Laboratory or physician offices.
Delivers laboratory reports for physician offices and sorts incoming
mail paying attention to special deliveries that may need to be made
(i.e. O.R. reports).
Coordinates specimen handling and processing of lab specimens for
outreach clients according to established policy and procedure.
Completes clerical work as needed for proper processing.
Delivers orders from offices for supplies and keeps courier van
stocked with common items to meet customer immediate needs.
Observe confidentiality with patient and fellow employees. Works
well with others and makes every effort to contribute to a positive
working environment.
Has knowledge of laboratory policy manual, Infection Control/Safety
Manual and Courier Manual.
Observes proper safety techniques. Receives no major moving
violations. Knows how to use a Blood Spill Kit.
Responsible for security locking as well as daily bank deposits, and
laundry transport from the 3 Horizon offices.
Responsible for maintenance and repairs on the Courier Van.
Complies with Inland Hospital Hand Hygiene Standards.
Adheres to Inland Hospital Standards of Behavior.
Performs all other duties assigned.
PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTExposed to all patient specimens including human waste, all types of
body fluids, including HIV, HBV positive blood. Unpleasant smells may
be encountered. Exposure to dangerous substances is sometimes
unavoidable. Workload, long and irregular hours and patient client
expectations may create a stressful working environment.PHYSICAL CRITERIA/EFFORTWork involves sitting/driving approximately 80% of the time. Physical
dexterity, vision and hearing are constantly required. Bending,
stooping, and walking required. Occasional exertion handling supplies.SAFETY
Maintain a safe environment which includes knowing and
understanding hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
Report and directly address identified environmental hazards when
appropriate.
Report and directly address violations of patient safety policy
and/or protocol when involved or observed.
Other duties as requested by Director.
OCCUPATIONAL RISKSFailure to follow SOP could result in needle sticks, falls on slippery
floors, injuries form lifting, injures on instrumentation. Exposure to
blood and/or body fluids. Failure to follow safe driving practices may
result in increase risk of injury.PROBABILITY AND CONSEQUENCES OF ERRORSAccuracy and alertness are most important when dealing with laboratory
test. Could cause dire consequences for patients through clerical
errors. Increase risk of injury or toxic spills could results from
improper handling of blood or blood products or biomedical waste.NUMBERS SUPERVISEDThis is a non-supervisory position.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE JOBMust have good communication skills. State of Maine driving license
with no major infractions for the last three years. Must be willing to
work in all environments with potential exposure to infectious
materials.EDUCATIONHigh School diploma or equivalent.EXPERIENCEPrevious experience preferred, however not mandatory.SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE REQUIREDStandard precautions, hospital and laboratory procedures which can be
obtained on the job.
