Description:The Business Intelligence (BI) Specialist works within the Information Technology Division to support the both the Tableau and Power BI analytics platforms and the resultant outputs which are consumed by the various operational units. The Business Intelligence Specialist works closely with other data analysts, operational management, key departmental subject matter experts and agency leadership to develop data analytical and visual tools, standard processes, relevant reporting products and meaningful dashboards for the purpose of supporting the strategic crime fight.

Roles and Responsibilities: Understands business requirements in a Business Intelligence (BI) context and designs data models to transform raw data into meaningful insights. Assumes the role of client's Business Intelligence technology subject-matter-expert with hands-on working skills with Tableau and Power BI. Develops and implements design principles in Tableau and Power BI. Tunes complex workbooks and large datasets for optimal Tableau and Power BI performance and maintainability. Performs VizQL queries and functions in Tableau. Performs DAX queries and functions in Power BI. Understands the analytic needs of law enforcement and translates these needs into meaningful and actionable data visualizations. Standardizes data collection by developing methods for database design and validation. Extracts data from databases and data warehouses for reporting and to facilitate sharing between multiple data systems. Creates customized charts, dashboards and calculations per law enforcement customer requirements. Performs data analysis, data validation, data mapping/design, by accessing multiple sources, specifically data residing in data warehouses. Uses SQL, Excel VBA or Python tools to automate reports and data ingestion processes. Integrates geo-spatial data into BI systems emanating from a Geographic Information System (GIS). Reviews internal data processes and systems and identifies opportunities for improvement. Analyzes data and identifies data gaps and/or data integrity issues. Develops and deploys Tableau and Power BI applications. Completes related projects as assigned.

Demonstrated "hands-on" experience as a Tableau and Power BI designer and analyst. Ability to design complex management reports and interactive dashboards with drill-down to detail and analysis pathways to supporting reports and datasets. Ability to develop a strong understanding of business and operational requirements while working with departmental users and analysts to define specific process, workflow and/or other technical requirements. Ability to leverage Tableau's advanced functionality (e.g., parameters, actions, tooltip modifications, etc.) to create analytical dashboards. Ability to leverage Power BI's advanced functionality to create data-rich dashboards, writing DAX expressions and implementing security. Ability to develop custom BI outputs that require knowledge of scripting and programming languages such as R and Python. Ability to develop ad-hoc reporting for diverse business problems. Ability to execute data queries across multiple data sources in support of business intelligence reporting needs. Ability to format query results/reports in various ways. Ability to design, develop and maintain BI self-service reports and dashboards, identifying KPIs to allow users understand the drivers behind results, predict future outcomes and perform "what if" analysis. Ability to recognize and adopt best practices in reporting and analysis: data integrity, test design, analysis, validation and documentation. Ability to partner across IT to support agile project development and short cycle iterations to deliver continuous business value. Excellent writing and oral communications skills. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent time management and organizational skills with attention to details. Strong relationship management and collaboration skills.

Experience: At least three (4) years of BI application development, including visualizations, parameters and report optimization. EXPERIENCE MUST INCLUDE BOTH TABLEAU AND POWER BI ENGAGEMENTS AND/OR PROJECTS. Strong experience in developing and implementing BI design principles. Strong history in optimizing the BI user experience. Proficiency in SQL Server preferred (e.g., ability to create stored procedures). Working knowledge of MS SQL databases. Working knowledge of R and Python. Working knowledge of SQL Server Reporting Services. Sound knowledge of database management, SQL querying, data modeling, data warehousing, business intelligence and Online Analytical Processing (OLAP). High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office programs.

Education: Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or other related discipline.

Certification: Tableau Desktop or other Tableau certifications are desirable. Successful Microsoft BI-related test results are desirable.
