The Baltimore Sun is hiring a Senior Financial Analyst. The role has the responsibility of monitoring the productivity and profitability of internal clients and providing operating managers with monthly reporting on actuals and forecast with variance analysis. The analyst will be actively involved in month end close for assigned clients especially accrued expenses. The analyst will develop the annual operating plans in close coordination with the operating managers. The analyst will utilize multiple databases and financial control systems to perform financial planning and reporting in a timely and efficient manner. This is a hybrid role that requires strong accounting as well as analytical skills.ResponsibilitiesAccounting FunctionsPrepare monthly journal entries for accruals, intercompany chargebacks and reclasses. Review GL detail for accuracy and completeness for assigned departments. Research the GL to explain unusual balances. Assist managers with accounts payable issues. Monthly ForecastingPrepare and upload monthly forecasts for department revenue and expenses in coordination with operating managers. Perform variance analysis to plan and previous forecasts. Research variances to determine root causes. Provide written report to operating managers and quarterly comments to corporate reporting.Operating Plan and ForecastingParticipate in development of annual operating plan and monthly forecasts for assigned departments. Coordinate with operating managers both locally and centrally to meet budget objectives. Provide year over year comparison and trend analysis to support proposed budget. Prepare written commentary for final budget package.Decision SupportPerform ad hoc financial analyses for various stakeholders evaluating proposed operating changes and strategic projects.Other duties include preparing cash deposits, SOX compliance reporting, fixed assets review, and other duties as required.Qualifications
Bachelors in Accounting with five years related business experience.
CPA or CPA eligible preferred
Month end closing experience required.
ERP and general ledger experience required.
Database experience (Hyperion Essbase, SAP, Oracle) required.
Excellent MS Excel skills including: pivot tables, lookups, summing functions, logic formulas.
Must be a self-starter that is detail oriented, deadline driven, flexible, and able to work independently. Experience working with remote partners via online meeting sites.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills required.
