Position SummaryAs an Engineering and Physical Science professional, you will use your skills to create the systems and tools that will be used to enhance the operation of intelligence. You will advise, administer and perform scientific projects, such as planning, designing, and constructing specialized equipment, and ensuring adherence to sound engineering and scientific standards and principles. The NSA offers multiple areas of focus for facilities engineers, including computer, architectural, electrical, mechanical, and structural. In addition, we are seeking skills that include computer design, microelectronics, radio frequency design, and systems engineering. This position is a Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS) position in the Excepted Service under 10 U.S.C. 1601. Monday - Friday, with basic 8hr/day work requirements between 0600 to 1800 hrs (flexible).SkillsThe ideal candidate should have excellent problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, and be able to:

- Operate with minimal oversight and be completely comfortable navigating various Systems Architecture and Engineering Protocols;- Design and implement short- and long-term strategic goals for designing, developing, managing and maintaining systems hardware and/or software, ensuring performance, security, scalability, maintainability, and reliability;- Create and maintain hardware and/or software system architecture designs using standard methodologies;- Collaborate with technical leads and developers on component detailed designs and technical specifications to ensure alignment with overall solution designs;- Advance systems, and system components, through technology maturity levels from basic research to fully functional;- Ensure planned and in-place system hardware and/or software architectures align with mission goals;- Provide technical expertise and architectural guidance and assistance to program personnel including Engineers and Scientists;- Design, create, and monitor the implementation of end-to-end integrated systems;- Review new and existing system designs and make recommendations for improving or altering the systems;- Balance and focus development of systems and maintenance as requirements change.

Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following is desired:

The Laboratory for Physical Sciences (LPS) is seeking motivated System Architects to provide expertise, guidance, and support to the research and implementation of solutions that align mission-driven priorities with technical capabilities. LPS is a premier research organization, managed and operated by the U.S. Government, focused on developing new and innovative technologies to improve national security. Across its three locations, the University of Maryland-College Park, the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, and Ft. George G. Meade, Maryland, LPS works across industry, academia, national laboratories and other government agencies to conduct research on advanced information technologies and drive state-of-the-art scientific and technical innovation.

As a hardware and/or software System Architect, you will leverage your technical skills and expertise to collaborate on framework design and implementation of complex software and hardware systems. Specific responsibilities will include:

- Guiding the development of hardware and/or software of future computing technologies;- Designing and developing novel hardware and/or software system architectures that include early or exploratory technologies;- Maintaining and evolving these architectures by reviewing and introducing changes based on project requirements and academic or industry advances;- Leveraging emerging technologies and standards, and collaborating with vendors and partners to evaluate and incorporate offerings, when appropriate;- Identifying, managing, and actively reducing risks, measuring progress across various efforts, and maximizing reuse of previous efforts, all while managing highly dynamic architectures.
