Guidehouse Digital (f/k/a Ace Info Solutions (AceInfo)) is currently seeking a VLab System and Cloud Administrator to support our federal project, in Silver Spring, Maryland. The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Office of Science and Technology Integration (OSTI) performs portfolio management for planning, research and development, and integration efforts for science and technology improvements across the NWS to build a Weather-Ready Nation. OSTI analyzes requirements for service improvements from NWS field offices and National Centers through close coordination with the AFS Office; develops potential scientific and technological solutions through coordination with partners within NOAA and with the external research community; and sponsors applied research and development of programs/projects to address these requirements. NOAA’s Virtual Laboratory (VLab) Cloud is a Cloud based system that supports research, development, testing, training, and non-mission critical workflows for the Office of Science and Technology Integration. VLab Cloud goals are to:

  • Maximizing stability and security while remaining agile
  • Controlling and monitoring costs
  • Providing security Responsive reliable support
  • Streamline and automate onboarding and maintenance

Duties & ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will provide system and Cloud administration as well as assist with the growth, streamlining and evolution of NOAA’s VLab Cloud. The successful candidate will work with NWS staff to develop solutions for technical issues impacting VLab Cloud. Technical issues involve: (a) Cloud architecture; and (b) Maintaining a secure and up-to-date operational system. Specifically, this individual will support a number of activities including a) Setting up and configuring Cloud infrastructures (b) Provide Cloud support; c) Assisting in keeping Cloud services up to date and secure. We are looking for a highly motivated, goal oriented individual, who loves technology and works well within a team and individually.

Leadership – 10%
  • Provide knowledge, guidance, expertise, consultation, and training on AWS Cloud Services.
  • Provide guidance and expertise on AWS cloud architecture.
  • Work with various teams to help migrate applications to the cloud.

System Administration– 80%
  • Develop and provide cloud architecture and implementation.
  • Migrate applications from on-premise to the Cloud.
  • Assist with the administration of MDL’s Cloud systems (patching, scanning, auditing).

Documentation and Reporting – 10%
  • Document all work within our ticketing system (VLab Redmine).
  • Summarize guidance within internal wikis.
RequirementsRequired Qualification:
  • BS/BA in Computer Science Meteorology, or related technical field of study (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of Linux system administration and 2+ years of Cloud administration
  • Experience with Cloud, specifically Amazon Web Services (Systems Manager, IAM, EC2, EBS, EFS, Lustre, S3, Lambda, RDS, AWS cli, and boto3/java AWS SDK)
  • Linux system administration
  • Advanced shell scripting skills
  • Experience with issue tracking
  • Experience with revision control (specifically Git)
  • Strong problem solving and logical thinking skills
  • Experience writing and running automated tests
  • Attention to detail
  • High degree of initiative, excellent communication skills
  • Must be reliable, self-motivated, and comfortable working in an agile and creative team environment
  • Ability to work independently
  • Experience supporting and maintaining large projects
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident is required for the position.
  • Candidate must successfully pass a Federal Background Investigation.
Preferred:
  • Experience with centos/Redhat OS
  • Experience with continuous integration (e.g., Jenkins)
  • Experience with Gerrit code review
  • Experience with Python
  • Experience with databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Elastic Search)
  • NOAA FISMA and NIST 800-53 Security controls
  • Experience with containerized systems such as Docker.
  • Experience with Kubernetes
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ruby, Freemarker, XML, Apache HTTP, and Apache Tomcat
  • Strong writing skills for documentation purposes
  • Experience troubleshooting complicated issues
  • Experience supporting and maintaining an operational system
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet project deadlines, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and a willingness to learn new skills for professional growth within the position
