Medical Technologist:

The Certified Medical Technologist is responsible for knowledge of specialized scientific principles and procedures and for performing advanced technical work in the Clinical Pathology Service. In this capacity the employee will be responsible for/able to perform the following professional medical technologist duties pertaining to clinical care:

Qualifications:

Degree/Education: Earn an baccalaureate degree or higher in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited training program resulting in certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or their designee (CLMS) as a MT/MLS.

Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: CPR

Experience: 3-5 years.

Board Certification

Licensure/Registration: Must possess IT-II security clearance or have a current National Agency Check with Local Agency Check and Credit Check (NACLC)

Duties: The duties for the employee are as follows:

(1) Shall be able to read, write, speak and understand English well enough to effectively communicate with all patients and other health care providers.

(2) Possess strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

(3) Possess experience with Microsoft Office Suite programs such as Word, Excel, Access, Project, and PowerPoint.

(4) Possess the ability to maintain the strictest confidentiality and adhere to the highest degree of professional standards and integrity.

(5) The contractor must pass Color Vision Test

(6) Be a U.S citizen.

SPECIFIC DUTIES/TASKS THE EMPLOYEE SHALL PERFORM.

Responsible for investigating potential problems or questionable results, diluting or otherwise manipulating certain samples to obtain valid results, verifying abnormal results.

The incumbent handles unusual test requests, identifies and resolves inconsistent test results, and manages unusual events, such as the possibility of isolating rare disease agents that have not previously been described in scientific literature. Most tests are performed for diagnostic purposes, but may also pertain to Compatibility Testing.

Where appropriate, the incumbent develops new solutions to methodological problems, analyzes test systems, and devises plans to achieve objectives after literature reviews, contacts with colleagues in other facilities, other investigative work, or consultation with supervisory staff. Evaluates new procedures (commercially available or developed in-house), incorporating the requirements of research protocols, to determine their accuracy and usefulness for implementation. Records/reports results through a variety of data entry modes into laboratory, and retrieves information from these systems for various purposes, including to respond to physician requests, investigate abnormal results, or analyze workload or service utilization.

Performs Core Laboratory analyses - automated, semi-automated or manual, high-volume or low volume - in the Chemistry, Clinical Microscopy, or Serology Sections. This may involve a wide variety of different test methods and systems, including automated cell counting, latex agglutination, EIA, flow cytometry, microscopy, bone marrow support, biochemistry, susceptibility testing, indirect fluorescent antibody, direct fluorescent antibody, enzyme immunoassay, and molecular diagnostic techniques. This commonly involves many different samples including blood, serum, plasma, cerebrospinal, pleural, synovial, peritoneal and pericardial fluids and biopsy material. Performs highly technical Infectious Disease analyses in Bacteriology, Serology, Molecular Diagnostics, Virology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, or Parasitology. Analyses involve the isolation/identification of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, viruses, and other disease-producing agents, as well as many different diagnostic methods related to such agents. These diagnostic methods include, but are not limited to, automated testing, gram staining, culture, biochemistry, susceptibility testing, indirect fluorescent antibody, direct fluorescent antibody, enzyme immunoassay, and molecular diagnostics techniques.

The incumbent interacts directly with patient care physicians in discussing interpretation of test results when requested, and suggests other test procedures that may help to address clinical problems. Reviews daily quality control data and resolves most issues at his/her level. Further assists in the establishment of quality control methods and ranges, helping provide the statistical basis for defining and/or validating quality control ranges. Calibrates, standardizes, adjusts, and maintains instrumentation, following established protocols that may nonetheless be complex in nature. Investigates, recognizes and resolves quality assurance problems of various types, including pre- analytical, analytical, or post-analytical. Troubleshoots instruments, test methods, and processes, and selects, implements, and documents corrective actions, consulting with higher authority regarding consistent or unresolved problems. Instructs (provides bench instruction and assists in didactic presentations) for students of various types, including Medical Laboratory Technicians, Clinical Laboratory Officers, and Pathology Residents on policies, methods, instrumentation, and complex specialized tests. Coordinates the handling and resulting of Proficiency Testing specimens.

The incumbent consults with manufacturers to test and provide feedback on their test systems, kits and reagents before they are commercially released, which can result in significant changes in the product available to the public. Assists in updating policy and procedure manuals, performs inventory of materiel, rotates stock, and maintains all necessary records. Seeks and applies safety information necessary for proper handling of infectious agents and hazardous materials, and takes appropriate action to contain spills, perform decontamination procedures, utilize appropriate personal protective equipment, comply with universal precautions for infectious agents, and otherwise ensure a safe working environment. Participates in continuing education and may occasionally present continuing education for other staff members.

The incumbent assists in the evaluation of the assigned Section for compliance with applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements promulgated by multiple organizations and further ensures compliance with same.

Clearly, accurately, and in a professional manner, communicates laboratory results and inquiries to healthcare providers and other internal and external customers.

Complies with team ground rules which include assisting other team members in completing assignments as necessary or as requested and fills in where and when needed.

Maintains competency in technical and Command related requirements and completes requirements on time.

Performs other duties as assigned.

The primary duty hours for this position are between the hours of 0600 (6 a.m.) to 1800 (6 p.m.). However, the work schedule for this position will be reviewed on a monthly basis, which may result in an adjustment to these primary duty hours. As a result, this position must be flexible to duty hours as the duty hours may be changed requiring work to be performed on any day or shift, including evenings, nights, weekends or holidays, necessary to meet mission requirements. Any changes will be identified four weeks in advance.
