Job Description

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Accounting Manager provides financial leadership and direction to all aspects of the financial cycle to ensure optimal performance in the collection and analysis of financial data and is responsible for timely, effective financial reporting.

The Accounting Manager will lead a team of 5 professional accounting staff in maintaining the consolidated financial statements. Working with the Budget and Planning Manager and the CFO, the Accounting Manager will coordinate the monthly financial package to the Chairs Committee, Finance Committee and Board of Trustees.

The Accounting Manager will assist in the organization and oversight of the annual audit; monthly consolidated financial statements; month end closing and financial review; and will be responsible for establishing, monitoring, communicating and maintaining internal controls.

The Accounting Manager will also assist in cash flow monitoring, variance reporting, and financial analyses as required. Compliance functions include monitoring compliance with all financial reporting standards, initiating policy revisions when required, and maintaining and updating internal procedures as necessary. System administration functions include the on-going operational and informational integrity of the general ledger as well as other applications, reports, and databases. Duties also include monitoring resolution of policy issues and acting as liaison with both internal and external auditors.

The Accounting Manager will work to provide guidance and recommendations for the establishment of internal policies and will be responsible for implementing new fiscal policies as directed by the Chief Financial Officer.

  • Lead and mentor group of 4 accountants and 1 accounting clerk - supporting them in their work activities and finding opportunities for career growth.
  • Oversee the accounting for 18 separate companies and the consolidation of these entities on a monthly basis.
  • Maintain and monitor monthly and year-end closing schedules for the Physicians Organization and all consolidating entities.
  • Assist in the preparation of annual financial statements (including footnotes). Assist in the preparation of the monthly financial statements, including variance analysis and balance sheet review.
  • Work with the CFO to provide guidance and recommendations for the establishment of internal policies regarding both economic and compliance issues and implement new fiscal policies as required.
  • Assist in research on technical accounting issues with staff and external auditors as required to comply with US GAAP.
  • Review each company's financial statements and balance sheet reconciliations on a monthly basis to identify unusual items, variances or trends, which impact the consolidated results.
  • Collaborate with administrative and physician leaders within our departments to support their work.
  • Coordinate the audits at year-end and other related audit activities. Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of allocations and direct charges.
  • Ensure the completeness and accuracy of inter-company account activity.
  • Ensure the accurate completion of account reconciliations and manage the resolution of un-reconciled accounts for each business unit.
  • Make recommendations on employee hires, transfers, promotions, salary changes, discipline, terminations, and similar actions.
  • Address grievance and other personnel problems.
  • Provide effective direction, guidance, and leadership over the staff for effective teamwork and motivation.
  • Maintain position descriptions, responsibilities and standards of performance for department employees.
  • Conduct performance and salary reviews on an annual basis.
  • Collaborate closely with Tufts Medical Center and all Wellforce members accounting and finance teams on monthly reconciliations, intercompany charges, intercompany eliminations, etc.
  • Performs other similar job related duties as required or directed.

Qualifications

  • Ability to respond effectively to inquiries and engender trust from the physician community. Must show ability to solve complex problems, and manage multiple tasks and delivery dates.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills: experience working across multiple levels (including executive level) and functions; able to clearly communicate complex financial information in an easy to understand manner; and able to deliver message effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Bachelor's degree required; CPA preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience required.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
  • Works in an office setting.
