Job Description

Reports To: Director of Sterile Processing

JOB SUMMARY:

Directs the personnel, financial and operational activities for Sterile Processing and Equipment Distribution Departments. Responsible for the educational and orientation needs of the Sterile Processing Department. Plans, organizes and manages all activities involved in the acquisition, decontamination, storage, surgical case cart system, sterilization and issuance of medical, surgical and other related supplies, materials and mobile patient care equipment utilized in providing patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plan, develop, implement and manage policies, procedures, competencies, educational activities and quality assurance programs related to the acquisitions, decontamination, storage, sterilization and insuring of medical, surgical supplies, materials and mobile patient care equipment utilized in the delivery of patient care and treatment to ensure compliance with administrative and regulatory standards within the healthcare facility.
  • Develop and maintain record keeping systems for activities such as processing of instruments and equipment, specifications for instruments, assembled trays, quality assurance, case carts and materials output to provide information on departmental activities.
  • Provide consultation to supervisors in resolution of complex administrative issues. Provide leadership and oversight to supervisors, coordinators and technicians to ensure high level of customer satisfaction and fiscal responsibilities. Serves as a resource to the surgical services team and healthcare facility systems committees, regarding sterilization process, procedures and assists in changes as needed.
  • Establish and maintain liaison with Operating Room associates, physicians, surgeons, nurses and other professional associates to provide consultation on product specifications and to advise availability of materials for specific patient care and/or treatment procedures.
  • Maintain liaison with representatives of local, regional and national sterile processing providers as well as regulatory agencies to establish a resource for current trends and regulations within the service.
  • Review and improve standards on an on-going basis. Serve on intra- and inter-departmental committees related to organizational objectives. Seek opportunities to promote the vision, mission and value of the organization by serving in leadership positions on committees.
  • Provide leadership support to system hospitals; serve as a resource to enhance customer satisfaction, achieve optimal utilization and reduce costs. Assist in the evaluation of new products and patient equipment through membership on various committees.

Manager -Central Processing

Establish and maintain sterilization, safety and security standards, policies and procedures for Sterile Processing to ensure compliance with AAMI, AORN, OSHA, CDC, EPA, FDA, Joint Commission and state and local regulations.

  • Assist in the determination of departmental fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations.
  • Manage various personnel actions, including, but not limited to, hiring, promotions, transfers, performance appraisals, recognition programs and scheduling time off.
  • Ensure appropriate allocation of personnel to meet staffing and scheduling needs: assists subordinate leaders in resolving associate relation issues.
  • Improve patient safety in the delivery of health care by understanding and applying the patient safety goal of no preventable deaths or injuries.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Certifications:

  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required
  • Certified Healthcare Leader (CHL) preferred

Minimum Knowledge and Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare related field required

Minimum Work Experience:

  • Minimum seven years experience in Sterile Processing Department preferred
  • Minimum five years experience in management preferred

Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to introduce change and implement new programs and strategies
  • Ability to demonstrate a proactive customer service philosophy.
  • Must possess a high level of interpersonal skills necessary to work cooperatively with a wide variety of constituents.
  • Ability to be sensitive to the needs of customers through the practice of quality service principles.
  • Ability to lead and manage staff.
  • Must possess expert knowledge of preparation and understanding of financial and statistical activity reports.
  • Must demonstrate thorough knowledge and experience in sterile processing principles, infection control procedures, Joint Commission, AAMI and AORN compliance programs.
