Job Description

The Endoscopy Technician II reports directly to the unit manager and designated member of management team. Interacts with nursing and technical personnel, patients, physicians and members of the health care team. Certified assistive personnel are accountable to and perform duties under the direct, on-site supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or physician when providing delegated patient care tasks. The Endoscopy Technician performs a variety of direct and indirect clinical patient care activities and technical skills in the diagnostic and therapeutic gastroenterology / endoscopy practice setting within the established department policies and procedures. This description establishes the minimum essential responsibilities and functions within the scope of practice of this position.

  • Assists with equipment set-up and/or supplies, and knows what will be needed, during emergency situations as directed by the physician and/or RN.
  • Assists in collecting data for an objective assessment to identify patient’s needs, problems, concerns or human response, e.g., vital signs.
  • Processes specimens in accordance with procedure guidance.
  • Prepares patients for flexible sigmoidoscopy; administration of Fleets Enema, Tap Water Enema.
  • Performs general documentation duties based on unit functional needs, e.g. use of the CIS computer, telephone communications skills, filing, processing charges.
  • Assists the physician and RN in the implementation of the established plan of care.
  • Assists the physician and RN during diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Maintains room supplies and equipment; includes ordering and restocking.
  • Performs cleaning and disinfecting of endoscopes, rooms, and equipment.
  • Provides endoscopy room turnover and technical support.
  • Responds to emergency situations as directed by the RN and/or physician.
  • Provides and maintains a safe environment for the patient and staff by complying with regulatory agency requirements and standards.
  • Is responsible for maintaining continuing education.
  • Is knowledgeable about scope of practice issues related to the field of gastroenterology.
  • Comply with ethical, professional and legal standards of practice in patient care and personal/professional conduct
  • Participates in organizational performance improvement activities as directed.
  • Troubleshooting and maintenance of endoscopy equipment with equipment status report to Clinical Engineering. Is responsible for maintaining continuing education.
  • Accepts other duties/responsibilities, or special projects, as requested by Nurse Manager
  • Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required:
  • Accountable for 100% of the knowledge, skills and abilities for Endoscopy Technician
  • Eligible to take the SGNA Certification Exam, after 12 months functioning in the department.
  • Must be capable of following detailed instructions, possess good interpersonal skills and be able to perform a number of activities according to priority.
  • Good hand to eye coordination, mechanical ability, intact or corrected vision and hearing required.
  • Demands continuous mental and visual attention.
  • Able to think independently and work under stressful and emergency situations.

Qualifications

  • Math, logical skills are required.
  • Able to communicate and work as a team member.
  • Must be able to work independently and prioritize the work load.
  • The job will be Days M-F.

EDUCATION:

  • Level of knowledge generally obtained through completion of high school
  • Certification for Patient Care Trsaining ( CNA, MA) required

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two years experience-providing medical/surgical supplies with familiarity with
  • inventory, stocking and usage procedures.
  • One-year experience working on a PC with knowledge of database and software management systems.
  • Patient Care Related certification required
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Work requires occasional/frequent computer keying, lifting of materials approximately 20 LBS or greater, handling equipment. Walking and standing for long periods of time.
